Check out works by Bootsy Collins, he played with James Brown and later had his own projects. Larry Graham and Graham Central Station. Grand Funk Railroad, George Clinton, Funkadelics, Parliament. That's all I can remember right now. For more modern funk there's a funk band based out of Cincinnati called Freekbass. I think you can get soundclips off their website. Freekbass is produced by Bootsy Collins, and he plays on some of their songs too.

Im partialy to Grand FUnk railroad, and Sly and the Family Stone.
Weather Report did get funky at times, ala "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy"
U gotta be careful theres a VERY THIN line between Funky and Groovey...some people bitch about it to much tho.

Grrrrrr you beat me to it! Francis Rocco Prestia is the man for fingerstyle funk. The simple little line to the song "Diggin' on James Brown" gets me everytime.

james jamerson. His work with james brown is fantastic. The band "war" is great too. Don't just think of lowrider, that song sucks in comparison to their other work.

I've never found level 42 to be overly good...Mark King is monster, but level 42 are a little cheesy....for me they're cheesy New Wave with a slight funk vibe, but nothing wild. But they were funkier in the early years, but not what I'd call funk.
I find when I listen to Level 42, I tune out the rest of the band and just hear bass and drums , thats said, King's solo stuff is eminently more listenable!

Chris Wood from Medeski, Martin and Wood is a killer upright bassist, and plays some very groovy lines.

Though it is rarely ever seen, Prince can slap a bass just as good as anyone. He chooses not to really ever play bass in public though I had a chance to see him play a bass solo in 2004. He played bass on songs like "777-9311" by the Time and actually his first 5-6 albums he played bass as well as everything else. He started playing bass in the late 70's before he started on guitar.
He played a 5 string Warwick at one time and a Fender P bass also.

Prince is overrated by 80's pop "scenesters" and underrated by Musicans in general. He's actually quite good at times!

I don't consider them to be funk at all! They are straight up pop. Mark King is funky though. Their poppy sound is mostly aquired by the vocalist. Listen to "Running In the Family" and dare to call them funk :p

I really don't consider Level 42 funk, they're pop influenced by a bit of Jazz. You can't just consider that any band that uses slap bass is funky because that is simply not true. Both ways, Tower of Power as mentioned has fingerstyle funk whereas Mudvayne has slapping as Death Metal.

Awesome... I was going to make a thread like this, but it seems like someone just did it. I'm possibly getting the opportunity to play and tour with a well-known blues musician who also dabs in funk, so I wanted to get well-versed in the style. He had an organ player who played with Tower of Power at one point... Hopefully this works out... I would really love to tour around the world playing music. :thumb:

I wouldn't call Steve Bailey a funk player...
But Bill Dickens, that guy can turn his hand to anything, he's amazing!

he's amazing as long as he doesn't do that "move his hand up and down the neck and slap really fast while you just hear a cluster**** of clicks and slides" thing.

Jimmy Haslip can groove like a MO'FO.
Buckethead is pretty groovy too. Especially when he slaps.
But neither are funk, and one isn't even a bass player! Oh noes!

man, that rocks! I've actually got the dvd where he expalins how to do that...very good...
Also, Buckethead is great, but not that funky...Big Sur Moon is ace...and his 10 digit tapping rules.

For someone who claims to know alot of funk and groove you have not proved yourself
George Porter Jr. and the Meters = very shocking come back. But still very good. Also he made the cover of Bass player.
