You can tell when they lose their luster, they just start to sound like crap.

If you don't play them, once every two years (reso, basically).

But if you do play regularly, then yeah... you'll be able to tell by their sound.

Sorry about hijacking the thread but, What sound would you get from using Coated Heads as Resos

Errr... okay... if you need it...

Otherwise I'd basically be converting my paycheck into drum heads...

When the head is worn out...that'll be 3 months for the snare and a year for the batter heads of the toms.

Bassdrum only when I go thru it.

snare head like once a month for me
toms ive replaced 3 times in 6 months, but trying different heads each time
really depends on how much you play/ how hard you hit I would think
but i love the damn sound of a new snare head so bought a 10 pack of coated ambs and I replace a little bit early probably : P

i cant remember who it was but someone was suggesting to change
snare batter after one month, tom batters after three months and bass drum batter after 6 month; when regularly played of course.

I change heads when i can't get a satsfying sound out of them.

toms = every 2 months

this is more of a subjective thread that should be answered with a concept and not a set rule.

When the head becomes damaged, un-tuneable, or changes sound is a good time to change em out.

just about every show. thats one of the advantages of being the touring drummer for a decently known band

^can you explain how that is an advantage?

i normally change mine when they break.....

hahaha anyways, i'd change em when you break one or when you just have extra cash burning a whole in your pocket and they're getting kinda old.

just about every show. thats one of the advantages of being the touring drummer for a decently known band
send your used ones to me, i'll put em through some good use before they need to be thrown out...it'd save me money too.

Ugly.
I use coated heads as reso heads. To say they make them sound ugly is retarded. They bring warmth to the tone. On bigger drums (16+) They tend to give a real dark sound off as well. I love it.

if you're an occasional gigger (1-3 times a month) this is what I'd do:

Snare batter: every 6 months
Tom batters: every 9 months
Bass batters: every 12 months

Snare resos: every 2 batter changes (12 months)
Tom resos: every 3 batter chanages (27 months)
Bass resos: just once from the stock front head, then leave it be until you break it
