Okay. This is my first time posting in the drum section. Well I play bass. Thats the reason. Anyway I have to do a small acoustic recording project in school (I study music technology) And I thought that I'd use Djembe for the beat.

Now I have a small problem. Since I know only two ways of getting a sound out of it. To hit it with palm to get a booming sound and to hit it with fingers to get another sound.

I think those are called the bass and slap sound? Anyway there's third one called tone sound? How do I produce that one?

Ps. If someone has any ideas how to place mics in djebme I'd like that. And if you have any preferred mics tell me that too. Since in school there's huge amount of mics for me to use.

I was thinking about a good low end mic in the bottom of Djembe and a midrange on the top to get hand sounds?

Maybe try posting this in the other instruments part as well
It doesn't look like any people here can help.

You can get a 100 sounds out of a djembe.

From muted slaps, edge slaps, finger rolls, etc there's just a ton of stuff.

As far as mic'ing, eh depends on how well you want to do it. 57 off hte top and something like a e606 on the bottom would be interesting. Could really even use a condensor overhead.

yup. I got a lot of my sound from experimenting. Once you develop one way of getting a sound, you can other ways to that one sound to get others.

I.e. A slap, can be developed to a muted slap by resting the other hand lightly on the skin while slapping.

Then you got the bassy thud you get from using the joint between the rist and palm. You can hit like this and keep your and on the skin. Or quickly distance your hand, to get the thud to ring out a bit.

Experiment, have some fun.

I'll post this in the other instruments section. If someone has something to add go there.

Why this is drum AND percussion.

the two main sounds are from hitting the center with the palm, and the edges with relaxed fingers

I think tone is when your palm is on the head of the djembe and you just play it with your fingers ( with the palm still on the head ). Lol yeah.. drummers don't know much about percussion

Because if not many people are replying about what he needs to know then it may be better off in other instruments. there isn't a huge amount of percussion like this discussion going on in D&P anyway. Or none that I know of.
