Thats pretty cool, congratulations. I'm a drum major for our marching band (drum major doesn't really mean I deal with drums or percussion). We're marching in Disney World this spring.

I've been in marching band three years so far. Played plenty of parades and field shows. My band also went to Disney two years ago, you're going to have a fun time Walruses.

i was on drumline and we were pretty good ( we beat the drumline who was voted best in Lousianna after the state competition) but nothing cool like macy's day parade

Edit: we were judged by a guy named Dennis Delucia. He is the DCI percussion judge. We're thinking the only reason we lost state was becuase the competition was held in the other drumlines hometown and the judges were relatively unknown people (probably locals) so we're thinking it was rigged...so technically we don't get named "best drumline" but Dennis Delucia of DCI said we were better.

I'm gonna be a sophmore next year and hopefully i'll play tenors. I played 4th bass this year, it was pretty cool. My friend and I were the only freshman to make our line, we both had to beat out many upperclassmen so i know what your situation was like. Congrats on making snare line you'll have a ton of fun.

Anyway our drumline is pretty good, we marched a few small parades but that's about it. We are going to south padre island to play in april.

I kinda know what that's like. Our drumline beat the drumline that won state (actually it was full band that won state). We didnt really care that we didnt go to state because we beat the best. Every competition was us 1 place higher than them.

yeah, you brits probably don't know about that. the macy's thanksgivng day parade is held in new york city to celebrate the american thanksgiving holiday. macy's is a big department store chain headquartered in new york, and they've sponsored this parade for many years, decades even.

this is my 3rd year in band (junior)... pretty cool, the one thing about high school that's fun, lol. i go to a pretty small school, so we just have to try out for which part we're gonna play, not if we'll actually be allowed on the line... my first 2 years I played bass... i made snare line, but i really hate snare (its boring)... this year i played tenors and was drum captain... fun stuff, trust me.

steeldrummer11
02-15-2006, 10:13 PM
Well as far as I can tell my school has yet to have any boring snare parts. But Tenors are pretty wicked.

xNerox
02-15-2006, 10:18 PM
i meant relatively boring, compared to bass and tenors...

and i do maintain that basses have the most fun of any instrument in the stands (other than maybe the sousaphones)

Yah bass is fun, but sometimes i like stuff that is just very challenging and therefore is fun.

Its unbelievably easy(at a highschool level).

Most people just do the required minimum and have it sound like a highschool level. You want to keep up your practice habbits and keep everything clean and even(it does get hard if you do everything right).

Congratulations, hope you enjoy it!

Have you heard of Marcus Drumline from Texas? They are supposedly very high ranked in the nation. I live in Texas and we went to see them once, they had a cool show.

Are you from Texas, or a neighboring state, or did they just travel far to you? They are a really good line. We had a drumline competition here in Texas and they did a Marching drumline show (not the stand still). It was freakin awesome. They had a guitar soloist stand in the pit for a while then he went into the middle of the drumline while they circled around him and he did a kickass solo. It was TIGHT. They are amazing.

P.S: It's Plano West not west plano:)

no i'm not kidding you, i have a copy of the score card he gave us from the competition. It gives us a score and says "bravo, thank you." His tape that he gaves us was very complementary as well. He's awesome and i love his accent. Sounds like some mobster hahahaha.

meh, coby coco always called em west plano so that's what i learned to call them. Yes i've heard of marcus drumline too. I'm from Lousianna. Plano West came to our band competition becuase of their ties with our percussion instructor. They were amazing but honestly they didn't outscore us by much, which is awesome becuase are band isn't really that well known or anything. OUr drumline is really good though.

drumline is the BEST! i play 2nd bass...pretty much i play top bass part cuz our top bass is just starting. its amazing! CONGRADULATIONS on snare. we had 4 freshman snares cuz we only had 2 seniors and a junior...most of em graduated last year. I'm hoping to make snare or tenors...either would be fun for me! Have fun with that drumline...its the best experience in a lot of peoples lives.

if you're in a school big enough to have an entire class just for drumline, then you're definitely gonna have to try out for a spot in the first band.

my school has one class period for the entire band. (around 70 pc band, 10 pc drumline)

Yea, its the blueknights. Ive only had the chance to see them live once, AMAZING players. Colorado has some wicked sick drummers, they are pretty hardcore about it here. My marching band is just the 3a high school band, nothing at that level of course.

Im just 16 dude, Im not that great rudimentally. I definatly WASNT in it. Man, those guys are inhuman.

Yea, during marching season we start practice at 630 on a wet field, march the box at 170 (tempo) for about 20 minutes with our drums on, then do all these other work outs before we even start playing.

I play tenors, they weigh 45 pounds.... I sprint with that sucker.

Drumline is a big part in my life, i love all of it, good and bad. and when i mean bad i mean bad.

Were a highschool in Texas and were #1 in our region, and were pretty dang good (no bragging meant). We had our same teacher, Mr. Anonymous (for privacy) from 6th grade to the end of our freshman year. Our percussion section is spilt into 2 groups, symphonic and concert band. And i remember Practiceing all summer on one of our schools hardest marching performances, I was playing marimba that year (freshman) and it was pretty challengeing. I remember winning comps. and such fun stuff like that. and still we wondered why Mr. Anonymous gave such a harder show this year. then he told us. We walked into 4th period concert band and were pulled aside by Mr. Anonymous. We could only hear the low hum of the still air conditioner and smell the faint smell of salt in the air, that came from the previous classes tears that still moistened the dusty chairs we sat in. He told us that he was leaving to teach at another school and at a university. I wont lie, we were very close too him, wed gone on tours with him throughout louisiana (percussion ensemble, anyone seen us?). We knew things would be different, and now everytime we step onto that spotlighted field, we play in memory of our best teacher, friend, and Father of our drumline. We play for our teacher Mr. Anonymous....

By the way, we had a TAKS test today in writeing (Texas assesment of knowledge and skills) and that was part of my essay. Just like 10 times longer, anyone think i did good?

By the way Loyton, any body workouts i can do for tenors? im looking to try out next year, going from BD 4 to tenor 2

Ill Mitch

When this spring? My band's coming down there to play as well.

I'm leading the drumline next year. I've been writing tons of drumline stuff, including a nice snare/tenor feature, and over the summer my buddy and I are going to record all the stuff we're playing the following year.
