It wasn't in the Bass Videos thread so i guess this hasn't really been seen.

This is probably the fastest slapping (im not including double tumping) i have ever seen.

This guy's name is Louis Johnson. Its a pretty cool video.

Hmm. Funky, very funky. Some crazy lines there. But, WORST left hand technique, but a fairy good right hand technique. And not THAT fast, impressive and tasteful, but not wankery fast.

He lets his hand do what it wants.. so do I. It doesn't affect the music in any way, so who cares.

I have heard way faster for the record.

He's one of these cases though where left hand technique does not matter.

He's done more for bass than pretty much most people on this forum ever will. He has natural groove and rhythm, nice original sense of harmony and has done some incredible recording work. Not a lot of people really know this, but buy Michael Jackson's Off The Wall album. A lot of that is Louis Johnson on bass and features really innovative (harmonically - see Rock With You, rhythmically - see Get On The Floor, tastefully - see It's The Falling In Love) and groovy bass playing.

Yeah, obviously his left hand technique doesn't matter because the lines are great. I still don't like the use of his thumb though.

EADG
02-14-2006, 08:28 PM
I like his thumb, it looks funny and is amusing to watch.

Some of you (Quatre) would cringe at my slap technique and thumb angle, but I am self taught and didn't know any better. Why change to a proper way when I've already gotten used to my own?

Haha, and old substitute teacher that I was on good terms with was also a bassist, he gave me that Starlicks video to inspire me. It's awesome, plus he gave me a old DOD Flange pedal, s'good stuff. :thumb:

Fast, but... I got bored halfway through and turned it off. The tone's horrible and impressive though it is, it's just not interesting enough to cut it as a solo piece.

Incidentally - reminds me of quite a few Claypool vids and solos I've seen. (Except that Les tends to hold my interest. :p ) I'm guessing he was quite an influence.

PaulSimonon

Old video, old bassist. He's got better grooves, he's not that fast, and he uses his thumb to fret notes a lot, which is why it's all wiggly. Been there, seen it, etc.

he's pretty talented, and although i haven't heard anything else by him, just from listening to that, it was extremely boring and repetitive, not much variety kind of sounded like he was trying to be larry graham on methamphetamines to me

IMO, it was very slow compared to lots of stuff (even our band's stuff). Definitely groovy but I was waiting for something more special all the time.

well, to be fair, he was around before Claypool; so if anything, Claypool is Johnson-esque.

Yeah well the reason why a lot of us post video's in an original thread is because they won't be seen in the Bass video thread.

You tell others to put video's in the bass video thread(unless it is thier own video) then you go post a video in an original thread.:thumb:

Jonas Hellborg ftw. Johnson's tone was awful and the piece was rather boring.

This is a video of Jonas live with the Mahavishnu Orchestra, from his first gig with them, televised for Paris tv stations. This is "It's the pits", on his Elegant Punk album he plays an extended version of the solo called "it's the pits, slight return".

Better than LJ.

He never created the music man, he just asked Leo Fender to make a bass for him, 'cos he wasn't getting the sound he wanted with his Precision at the time and Leo Fender delivered. But if it wasn't for him, Leo might never have made it.

This is a good one too, Jonas on double neck and the almighty McLaughlin there, magic stuff. I have an Ohne Filter Mark King dvd, Ohne Filter rocks!

Wintermute
02-15-2006, 08:54 AM
That one's a lot better. Mclaughlin is awesome - and I hugely prefer Hellborg's style of playing in this vid to is other one. His fretted tone is a bit crap, but that's probably at least partly to do with the monstrous amounts of compression on the file.

Edit - Oooh, just noticed the double-neck is a Wal. That's ace. :)

my Bro, Chris K has the Mark King Ohne Filter and its killer, good camera work, always showing the good bass lines, crystal clear picture quality, good lighting and an awesome sound mix.

Well, obviously there are loads of faster players...

but Louis was fast back in his day, but then again, Stanley Clarke towered over all in those days.

On his Elegant Punk album (I keep coming back to that one since it's an absolute groundbreaker) he has a track called "Reebop" named after Reebop Kwaku Baah, who was the percussionist for Airforce and Traffic. Reepbop died in late 1982, so Jonas wrote a song or him, and it's a wower, the melody is sparse, but the tone is second to none, a very very cool piece.
