Which do prefer when playing live?

4x10. I find 15's lack definition in highs and mids, and can sound really muddy at times. I'd like to have both, but I'd probably get the 4x10 first.
Definatly a 4x10 for its added punch and clarity. Only advantage about a 1x15 is that its usually a bit lighter and easier to transport.

4x10 FTW, better defined tone and it will most likely be louder because of the increased serface area

1x15's get muddy quick. They dont represent mids, high mids, and highs well.
4x10's can handle everything generally well.

Depends on the tone I want. Useally a 1x15...

are you serious? i swear i was just about to mention them.
Anyway, why does speaker size even matter? I mean Jean Baudin plays his 11-strings through a Phil Jones Briefcase. It is just a 2x5.
And PJB came out wit an new combo, the suitcase. I still have serious gas for a PJB sixpack though.

4x10 definitley.... now a 410 with a 215 is a different story.

id actually want the Extra Large Schroeder cab over anything else. The front is a 3x10 with a tweeter and then a 2x12 angled. The best of everything.

as long as the cab was designed really well to accomodate both size speakers without it sounding like a farrt in a box.

haha. weird.
i really like the idea of using 5" drivers.
my ideal rig would be that 600w behemoth amp theyve got (the one with the completely deisel power tubes) with 2 24s w/ 2 8s, and a 16H
but, with most speakers, size does matter. frequency-specific sensitivity, attack properties, etc all change with speaker size.

I used to play with an olde 70's amp, it was the size of a cabinent and a ahlaf, it had a built in 250 watt amp with eq and ****, but the speaker was like, 24" or something huge like that.
Funnily, it wasn't muddy and I really liked playing through.
It was called 'Bass Machine' and was made my HH Elctronics or something.

i like either 1 15 or 2 15
if its a good speaker i can have just as good highs as a 4x10
not to mention they dont call it a high defintion, or a mid range, is a bass

just because its a "bass" doesn't mean I shouldn't be able to hear anything beyond an indistinct rumbling. Most of the 1x15s I've tried sound great say in your home or in a studio, but they simply aren't standalone live equipment. In tandem with a 4x10, they're fantastic, but I can't stand them alone.

if it's solely a 4x10 and a 1x15, i'd go with the 4x10. but many 1x15's have a tweeter that reproduce high-end really well, and in many instances end up handling a wider range of tones than a sole 4x10

Speaking of those PJ amps, my local music shops gota few of those lotsx5 cabs in there (not sure how many speakers to be exact, but its lots)
might go try them out for no good reason :D

4x10 usually have a tweeter too, and 15s leave a big space b/w what the tweeter can effectivly cover and what the 15 can. 4x10 w/ tweeter can cover that range of frequencies. simply put 1X15 are not designed to be a stand alone cab, 4x10s are.

i usually don't see 4x10s with tweeters too much at all, mostly because 10's can handle highs more effectively. there will be no real difference like this between them- a tweeter will let a 1x15 handle just as wide a range of tones as a 4x10 without a tweeter, if not more. 1x15's work just fine as standalone cabs

True but still i mean a 15 inch speaker is always going to be my choice over a 10in if i was playing live i woudl use a 2x15

Maybe he meant a horn. My SWR that I used for years was a 4x10 with a horn. But now I'm much happier with a 2x10 with horn along with 1x18. About as full range a system as you can get.

......Honestly why not go with a 4x10 as your first buy...then add a 1x15 and go split range? .....That works really well as far as I'm concerned. But if you were just going with one cab You have to do 4x10's no choice...also I didn't know 4x10's came without a tweeter in the center of the speakers....

When you say cab do you mean like a combo amp with a built in eq. and such or a cab and head? Would the combos be the same as a cab would be?

well if you had a head that was equivelent to the eq in the combo, and a cab that was equivelent to the speaker in the combo, they could potentially sound the same.
