Hey, i was listening to some avenged sevenfold last night, i noticed they got some phat bass line here and there. Personal i dont think he the best bass player in rock music but like i side he has some good lines here and there. And pretty good tone as well. Now, know some of you guys are tired of hearing about this band and i appologize. But to thoughs of you who are into this band what do you think?

I think they suck, perhaps even more so than your typing skills.

I think they're pretty terrific and when the basslines can be heard, they're pretty cool. I won't See You Tonight comes to mind.

I listed to them for the melodies and harmonies, though.

I think he's an alright bassist. Not flashy at all but has some sweet runs and fills here and there, as you said. Personally, their first two cd's own City of Evil by far. CoE has a few good songs here and there but on the other's, song after song is just a treat to listen to.

Now come on, man, there's no need for that.

I find a7x to be incredibly boring and "scene." Their bassist is "meh." I haven't listened to everything but from what I have heard I wasn't a big fan at all.

Can't stand their vocalist. They're a tight band though IMO, but nothing special bass-wise. As said, some good things here and there.

Johnny is nothing special. Neither are the guitarists. It pisses me off that all these scene kids think Synyster Gates is like the best guitarist ever. He is sloppy, and show-offy. Most of the time at least.

Personally, i love this band... I've seen them 5 times (most recently, a week ago).. Johnny isint really anything too special, though he does have some cool lines... I wont see you tonight pt. 1 (which he plays finger style live, rather than the usual pick.. does some slapping at parts of it for extra grit i assume).. The Wicked End, Blinded in Chains, Lips of Deceit.. On their 2nd album (waking the fallen) you cant really hear johnny for the most part.. he talked about while recording their latest (city of evil) saying their producer kept him real low in the mix for the most part.. so, he made sure to be a bit more prominent in this CD...
I wish i could find that video again... He playes his 8-string LTD in it...

btw, the Rev (Drummer) is pretty freaking sick, espcially live... Syn is alright, ive noticed several mess up's.. Zacky is pretty dead on most of the time... When i saw them on Monday (1 week ago) they didint use any backing guitar tracks like they usually do, and on the CD's.. sometimes on the CD's they'll have 5 guitar's going all at once.. it was nice seeming them 'all natural'..

Phil - Overrated?... i never hear anyone say he's good? haha could you give some examples? other than that bass player mag. article.. im a little confused how that's "talking big"... i'd have to go back and actaully read the article perhaps..

yeah i've met them before as well.. Syn is kind of an ***, i think he might be a bit full of himself personally... i still like him as a musician, and i dont really know him, but when i saw them in cleveland he went way out of his way to avoid the line of people to get in, then didint seem all to happy about the 3 people going over to him...

and Rev (Drummer) seems kinda like an ***.. interview's and in person...

I like their music, I was kind of heartbroken when theyre singer blew his throat. The new albums ok, it has its moments, i liked their older stuff more though. Synyster Gates in extremely obnoxious and full of himself though, he thinks he's alot better then he actually is. I saw an interview where he badmouthed Alexi Laiho (from Children of Bodom). Thats when I lost any respect I had left fof him, because he frankly doesnt hold a candle to Alexi.

Their drummer is pretty kickass though, I like his playing style, it fits real well.

I don't like metalcore.

I find their "riffs" boring.

I hate their singer (old voice and new voice).

I think their songs are overall sloppily written and have no real thought put into it.

I hate their "sceneness."

etc.

Overall I really just don't like them based on the music I listen to...it just doesn't fit in and it rubs me the wrong way.

If you like it, like I always say, it's totally cool, but I can't get into it at all.

I like their music. Not into their stage names or looks, they're pushing it with all the goth crap.

Synister Gates is usually talked about because he went to GIT. I like his playing style. If you look online at one of those music video sites that people post from on myspace, theres a video of him doing sweeps, sounds good to me, not sloppy at all. I've never heard him in an interview, but if he's an ***, I don't see how that affects their music, and that IS what it's all about, right? (I hate it when theres an overemphasis on how musicians aren't personable or they dress trendy. If you're going to base your listening on looks, you'd be watching Kaila Yu sing.)

If you're wondering, the bassist uses a Sterling with a GK head and cabs.

For those of you that like their first two albums but not their latest one, I'm not surprised. City of Evil is more of a metal album, not that punk fusion stuff (although I do like their other albums, and punk).

to further that gear list.. yeah, it's a sterling, with a... 1001 or 2002 rb head (i cant remember right now) into a GK 4x12 Neo cab... On previous records though, he used Ampeg SVT head w/ ampeg 8x10

About Syn and his sloppiness... i do think he is a bit, ive seen them 5 times (6 now, in 2 month-ish) and he's messed up some solo's... Eternal rest and Chapter Four that i've seen... but, everyone has an off day ya know?

me personally i think very little of musicians that use guitar backing tracks live (like kiss or ashlee simpson >:P)

although i find that one song bat country moderately catchy i know in my heart that it sucks and heres why, boring generic riffs, completely overproduced, boring guitar solos, bad lyrics, singer pretty much sucks. in addition, avenged sevenfold reeks of being a manufactured band considering their ridiculous names and pretentious lyrics/album artwork. another thing is they bring absolutely nothing to the table as artists and are simply re-hashing things other people have done before and have done better.

the only good thing avenged sevenfold has ever done is have their bass player participate in that contest at bassplayer magazine to win his rig which if i win (which i doubt) i will promptly sell :naughty:

Have you seen them live? I have. And I wasn't impressed by Syn's speed. Sure he was shredding like a mofo, but it wasn't accurate. If he didn't have the wall of distortion to cover his tail no one would consider him good.

I like the band, but I get tired of hearing "Syn and Zacky are virtuoso guitarists, and the Rev is the best drummer I have ever heard" from scene kids who can't recognize talent.

i admit, syn isint always on par with his CD work.. as i've mentioned, ive seen him mess up a few solo's, but it was 2 of the 5 show's i saw, and 1 song out of the 5 - 11 they played each time.. Everyone messes up, how often have you screwed up while doing a show?....and when i saw them in Cleveland, OH.. and mid set, syn went up and did like a 5 minute guitar solo... Clean and distorted.. so, there goes your 'wall of distortion'... it was an amazing solo, really... it put new meaning to his name for me. I was right up front when i saw it, and he didint seem hesitant or anything on any part of it.. knew what he was doing..

IMO, Zacky and Syn are good guitarists.. no virtuoso's, but good... and the Rev IS a damned good drummer... many many people will agree with that..

I dig City of Evil better than the other albums they put out. It sounds like a combo of Dream Theater and Guns N Roses, which is kinda cool. I miss that kinda cocky/flashy attitude in rock music.
The bass lines seemed to be buried as usual under the guitars, but from what is audible, he seems like he's a solid player. I suppose with all the guitar wanking going on, someone's gotta play it cool and low-key. There is nothing on the CoE cd that impresses me as far as his playing ability or his lines. He's just doing what a bassist does - being solid and in the groove.

They are really influenced by GnR... Shadows (singer) took vocal lessons from Axle's coach... and the rest of the band kinda speaks of GnR in interview's n' such... though, they also like Mr. Bungle  awesome stuff....

For anyone interested... i uploaded Blinded In Chains from the City Of Evil album.. at about 4:50, you hear the bass intro a new part of the song, and IMO is one of the better bass parts of the album...
though his skills do extend outside of the band.. i've seen him do slapping rather than picking..

I have no idea about what's 'scene' (using that word is pretty damn trendy nowdays too) in America. I have never seen these guys on a music video, or known their names, or looked at their website. I don't particularly care for band's reputations and 'image'.

I was browing for mp3s to download and I decided I'd take a pot shot. I like Avenged Sevenfolds music. It's theatrical and exciting. Their composition skills are far greater than most bands 'like' them, in terms of harmony, melody and arrangement. They understand what amkes a song fun to listen to.

Don't hate them because other people like them. Listen with an open mind.
