I know there's been an awful lot of threads on this - but hopefully you'll appreciate that my situation is a little more complex.

I just got a Warrick Thumb Bass (4-string, through neck) second-hand. The strings that were on it when I picked it up were absolutely fine, if a little on the old side. Except, the D broke a couple of days after I got it.

So, I bought a whole new set - I always replace all of my strings at once. The set I got were Rotosound 66 Swing Bass, long scale, 35 gauge. And when I put the G string on.....it buzzed like HELL. Right up to the 6th fret. Ditto the E. I tried raising the action at the bridge on the G, but it only made a slight difference (as in, it only buzzed up to fret 4).

So I figured it was just the fact that the strings were too light (they were noticably lighter than the ones I took off). So, I took the .55 strings I had left and put it on as the D rather than the A. Nah. Same problem.

I'm stumped. I know it's not the action, because the old strings were fine. It's not the gauge of the strings, because I've (sort of) tried both the second lightest and the heaviest gauge Rotosound do.

So what the hell is going on?

did u check the truss rod?

cause that could deff cause that. string breakage and buzzing. but u prolly already checked that. dont know what else it could be.

The old string might have been differnt scale.

Also, tension was taken off the neck when the D broke, and when you took the strings off, so chances are the bow in the neck was altered. To fix that, you'll need the truss rod adjusted. If you don't know waht you're doing, I wouldn't sugeest learning on a Thumb bass. They cost lots.

And its also possible that the bridge settings were changed when your removed and replaced the strings.

There are many possibilites for solving fret buzz depmnding on the problem.. The easiest one is take it to a store, and say 'Get rid of my fret buzz'.

have to disagree with u there, fingerstyle. if u leave ur bass without a string or two for a short while it doesnt really affect the bass permanantly, unless there is already something wrong with it. but ya take it to a store, if u dont know what ur doin.

Agreed, i've removed all strings for a few hours to boil strings & clean fretboard. Put back on with no side effects.
