Of course there is.

Gav shall take over this thread; I think the name that will be mentioned is Matt Reubano. Excuse the spelling.

First you gotta know what emo is...

Look at the hardcore/emo forum on here and read the rules and definitions. They're really solid, probably the best definitions I've ever seen. :thumb:

Still, I win for making the Gav signal.

^ It's like our signals for MX and DBJ...the Batman light but with different things:

MX - Camera
DBJ - Drums
You - Texas with a bass in it
Me - A chem lab flask with a bass in it

etc.

Oh yeah, if you're into hardcore, too, check out this band Guns Up! They have a really good bassist...I saw him live and before they started he played a sweet tap solo.

Genre oh gnre, whatever shall we do with ye.

Of course there are good "emo" bassists. As with any genre!

I don't really listen to that stuff much to know what ones are good though. And I'd jsut embarass myself by getting the slightest tehcnicalities wrong in the genre realm.

Thrice? Is their bassist good? Are they Emo or what? I relaly have no idea.

bottlerocket
02-13-2006, 11:36 AM
^ Thrice is weird...their bassist Eddie is good, yeah, but I dunno what exactly to call them...I wouldn't call them really "emo" but maybe post-hardcore type stuff? I don't really know...genres are annoying. :p

Yeah, I heard he's handicapped somehow, too, with his hands...I'm not exactly sure but I couldn't tell. I know he plays a Gibson Grabber bass, though. :thumb:

I hate genres aswell but I use to say that Thrice is post-hardcore.. :thumb:

Never heard that about his hands.. have to check that out, by thrice I can recommend "stare at the sun" which has a kickass bassline!

^ They're clearly not hardcore. :amaze:

Hardcore = Modern Life is War, Guns Up!, Madball, Ensign, Verse, etc.

If anything, they're screamo but, in reality, screamo isn't a genre; it's just "emo", since emo has screaming vocals all the time, but because people are, in fact, morons, we have to break it down even more into "emo" and "screamo".

ugh guns up blows gav, =P.

i woudlnt call thrice post hardcore...im not sure what to call them but not post hardcore, bear vs shark and thrice dont sound anything alike.

circle takes the square is screamo, not hardcore.

im going to list good bassists from bands that sometimes get called emo just to throw a catch all in here
alexisonfire's bassist is good, billy talent, blod brothers, brand new, the kinison, lovedrug, mewithoutyou (check my avatar and usertitle), misery signals bass player isnt bad, number 12,rufio,saetia most definitley has a good bass player (in venus and bachus he uses harmonics for those who dont beleive gav and i. not saying that using harmonics makes you a good bass player, but he definitley knows his stuff and knows what his isntrument can do), sunny day real estate, the used bass player isnt bad even though his band is, thursday. gav if ive left any out feel free to add.

Mic from coheed and cambria displayed a wonderful talent for groove and thump in the first two coheed albums, and does a hell of a live show. Same goes for 3 (emo-prog), zella mayzell (emo-punk), and plenty of other bands--silverstein, armor for sleep, from autumn to ashes, atreyu...

C&C gets pegged as pop-punk because most of their singles are poppy, and same with Armor. I'd think that silverstein's older stuff is definitely a predecessor to emo bands like saetia and circle takes the square. Fata and Atreyu are definitely not metalcore, and it's easy to see how Underoath and The Number Twelve Looks Like You and Funeral For a Friend can be grouped with them.

old silverstein has more emo-ish roots to them than their new cd but i woudlnt group them with ctts at all.

fata...gotta love fata. atreyu not so much at all ever.

armor for sleeps got some pretty heavy stuff, but again they dont really compare with ctts. not saying one is better than the other, because at the moment im not sure which one i like better.

c&c definitley good band....as long as you ignore this new album, good bass player, and good music, but more pop oreinted than traditional emo.
