hey, I just bought new strings for my student...rotosound 66's but im afraid they might be a littel too rough on her fingers, she has onyl been playing a month or so, i'm wondering if anyone's heard of a thing called "fast fret" or soemthing like it that you put on the strings to make them more smooth...i don't know much about it so any help is appreciated

I love fast fret quite a bit. I'd still use it, but I don't have the application for it playing with flatwounds.
I never really noticed for sure, but it might shorten the life of your strings since you're actually putting stuff on them, but it does work.

I dont know how they sound on fretted basses, but you could always have bought flatwounds for her.No roughness there.Though she'll get used to the rough strings eventually anyway

well the reason is i was originally going to put elixers on for her but I didn't have the extra pair i thought i did, so i found a good deal on these rotosounds ($10 a pack) so i bought them and then when i put them on they were rougher than i wanted

Use fast fret...
Prosteels have this rust feel at first, they are pretty rough and catch my fingers when i slide, for about 2 or 3 days i eminate that by apply fast fret, before i play... I always buy 2 bottles, one for my Gig Bag One for My House...
It really brightens your sound./..

I'm pretty sure fast fret uses some of the same ingredients as WD40 or other similar metal lubricants, so I would say that it would protect your strings, rather than shorten their life. I'm pretty sure they advertise that as well, but who knows? I could be a total ignoramus. :smash:
as they say in the bass business, its all about..........
callouses, callouses, callouses
but hey, whatever works

I was never particularly concerned, and I never noticed my strings dying prematurely, so it might not.
Still, the stuff works, and it's cool. It was like $4 with tax when I bought it.

logically it seems that any type of coating is going to diminish the brightness of a string since its not actually a metallic substance contacting the frets (this is strikingly apparent to me when playing Elixer strings, which sound noticeably less bright to my ears). Now, some people here are saying that it won't diminish your tone, and Naveed went as far as to say it would brighten it..... I'm not disagreeing with anyone as I've never tried the product, but honestly logic simply doesn't agree with these claims.... but then again, logic doesn't always apply to the bass world.

thanks for the input, as i said before its not for me...i have well developed callouses already its for my 12 yr old student and she has only been palying a month and she has a lot of musical knowledge behind her, but bass is proving to be quite difficult for her so im doing everything in my power to get her to stay with it becasue i see a lot of potential in her....however i'll be going off to college in the fall so it may all be in vain but the least i could do is try

First-off, I think you're mistaking the word logic with physics. I constantly argue on behalf of physics, but logic... well... that's another story altogether.
Secondly, highlife? Bleh.... wretched swill! I'd much rather drink Oprah Winfrey's bath water  pour me a Sam Adams and we'll be pals :thumb:
