View Full Version : Oops I broke my new Ampeg (I think)

OK so today the UPS man comes and brings me 3 boxes. This could only mean my brand new Ampeg stack has arrived. I quickly open the boxes, screw the wheels onto the 15, put the 210 on top and finally put the head in it's place. To my horror, the adapter is for America (I'm in Australia). OK no worries, I'll use my old one. BIG MISTAKE.

I plug it in, flick the switch, *buzzzzz* then the on light goes off. Hmmmmm.

I look at both adapters. Idiot. The American one is 120 volts and the Aussie one is 240 volts. :upset:

I check the fuse, it's still good. Now what I wanna know is, what have I done to my brand new and pretty damn expensive head? Is it as easy as just getting a converter to convert the 240 into 120 volts? Something tells me it's not as easy as that because the amp turned on with the 240 and then after about a second on buzzing it turned off.

Please help, I wanna play this thing.

Ouch man, the fuse if working properly WILL have engaged, I'd still replace that.
Check out Dick Smith for a transformer, I'll have a browse for you now...

The head will be fine, if the fuse worked properly :thumb:

It steps down to 110 Volts, which is fine... but check with someone at DSE

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm going into DS tommorow and gonna try out the adapter. So if I did over power it, the fuse would've stopped me from frying the insides?

Could've fried any number of components in the amp. If it's under warranty, chill.

I highly doubt it will have damaged anything man, fuses were made for these kinds of situations :)

Yeh crudd-bucket is correct, id look at the fuse though, considering it went out after a few seconds means the fuse must of done its job and kill the power, so possibly replacing that would be a good idea.

Ouch man, waiting as long as it would to get it shipped over, that must of been painful, like getting sucker punched by mike tyson painful.

Haha yeah it didn't take too long to get here but it just looks so mean and I know it's gonna sound awesome. I need to have it ready in 2 days so I can play it at band practice. I'm gonna replace the fuse tommorow and see how I go. Thanks for all the help.

Definently change the fuse, if its worked, it'll be proper fired and may lead to damaging othe components.

What kind of head is it? And what are the cabs? SVT, BXT, or BSE?

i almost did the same thing to my ampeg head! i had it kept at my best friends house for a while cause i had no cab and no room to put anything at the time....... he lost the power supply for it, and i was about to just snag another one and think nothing of it........ as soon as i plugged it in, i remember my brother made that same mistake with a computer..... so i double checked it, and the one i was about to use was too high........... scared me, haha..

Hope it's not dead though... good luck

I doubt you did any damage to the preamp section of the head, so it's most likely fuse problems/power amp problems.

Power amp problems are easy to fix, take it to a tech if replacing the fuse doesn't work.

probably fuse gone, so replace it.

That's a good deal.

Just take it to someone who knows about amps and stuff....

Take it to the bass player....They'll fix it im sure.
