so i was thinking today, is it possible that custom builders such as benevette and Ritter make their living completely on building and selling basses? because think about it. how many people acually order band new ritters a day? it really cant be THAT much. i mean, how many basses can a crew of......maybe 6 or 7 make a day? it's not that im interested in devoting my life to building basses, but really, how much do you think these guys make?

Well, those that don't unecessarily jack up prices make relatively little and build basses on the side.
Those that do (ALEMBIC **cough**) can manage.
I'd imagine most of them have day jobs.
Ritter only has 2 guys working. They sold 68 basses in 2004 and at least 39 last year. This makes their monthly salary huge. Sure, they can manage.

The majority of bass makers probably don't do it for money, if they play bass and enjoy that line of work.... It would be awesome to make basses for a day job, really damm good! Especially something like ritters, they had to come with those ideas and shapes, it would be great fun!

I was gonna say that...if you just buy all the parts for a bass and it costs about $800 to buy it, they'll probably charge you $1500 for all the labor, work, and time that does into the bass (cutting and sanding the wood, etc.).
