Hey people..
It's my first time posting on here, and I hope you guys can help answer some questions for me!
As a bassist I generally play the heavier stuff, Opeth, Nevermore, that sort of thing, and I do like a bit of a slap from time to time.
However, recently I bought an Aria electro-acoustic fretless Bass for £150 and I don't know what to play on it!
I need some mellow, slightly complicated yet cool sounding acoustic songs, as metal doesn't sound so great on acoustic, neither does slap.
Note-I refuse to play Emo, Pop or Punk..
James
Anything and everything Tom Waits.

When talking about acoustic bass, the one name that matters is Jonas Hellborg.

Seriously, Sade is on the money. But also check out Moloko's The Time Is Now. That line is smooth and I think it's actually played on an electro-acoustic fretless.

Can you recommend anything by him? I keep hearing his name, but I've never heard anything by him.

it's not an acoustic album although it has piezo bits on, but his best record is Eleant Punk. It's now out of print though.

I see you dropped Jimmy Haslip's name in another thread.
You big on the Yellowjackets? I've never heard them or Haslip mentioned around here...the dude rips.

yep, Haslip is a monster...what amazes me is how he can play those lines "upside down", so to speak.

sorry for the double post (edit don't work at work) but i forgot to say alot f newer tom waits doesn't actually have acoustic bass (all though about half of Real Gone does) if you want to play only acoustic bass songs on it but alot of electric stuff sounds cool and different on there. also try out the violent femmes

I just downloaded some Tom Waits and it's like...kind of experimental Jazz.
It's cool but it's not quite what I had in mind.
I mean, if you guys know Opeth's "Apostle in Triumph" or obviously Metallica's My Friend of Misery (which is a complete bass cliche), things like that..

Not all tom waits is that way, try downloading step right up, small change heartattack and vine, whistlin past the graveyard. Its still very bluesy but he got weirder as he got older

Why not just play those on your acoustic then?
Violent Femmes, another good band to play on acoustic.

That's what i'm saying! I DO play them on my acoustic. I'm just asking for other songs like them to play..
That and Schism, which again is a bit of a cliche, but sounds very sexy on acoustic.
