What is RMS? I was looking at a bass amps and it said it had 307 w of RMS power section. Thanks

u have to give us some time to post!!!!

RMS(root mean squared-i think) is basiclly the number of watts the amp can continuosly put out. basicly the bassis of how powerfull the amp is. im trying not to make the overly comlicated for ya, but if u have any more question ill gladly try and help.

Yeh basically the RMS wattage is the one you want to look for when wanting to know how powerful an amp is. The peak is usually much higher. And im guessing you were looking at the Ashdown MAG300. Great amp :D

Its the resitance of the wiring and electronics in the amp

a 65 watt amp at 8 OHMS is louder than a 65 watt amp at 4 OHMs

Assuming they are both the same type of amp

He was talking about the RMS wattage, not the ohms. The RMS wattage is the amount of power that an amp can continuosly put out without any risk of damage.

RMS (Root Mean Square, as said before).

Its the 'average' maximum output of the amp.

Since the signals your amp is putting out are waves (complex harmonic waves) , there are peaks and valleys in output level. The highest that the loudest part of the signal gets put out at is the PEAK power. There are also points in the wave where output power is lower.

The average output for the entire wave cycle is the RMS.

I thought it was "real mean squared." I'm probably wrong, though, since I am, in fact, an idiot.

It's basically the "true" amount of power your amp puts out without blowing it...that's how I think of it. The wattage is the total power available but the RMS is the amount of watts it puts out (basically, it takes the amp's headroom into account so the amp doens't blow).

That's a good way to think of it.

Dylan:

I know, TS...relax. Give us more than 4 minutes to answer, dude! :p
