Judging from the two new songs I heard live in Jersey, I'm feeling that this album will mark that they have managed to release 4 great albums, all with their own distinctive sound.
Still, Brand New's new album > Thursday's new album.
I'm psyched for both though.

I'll hopefully be catching them May 1st, a day before the album comes out at a small club. If not, I'll see them at Bamboozle later that week. Bamboozle has a lot more bands (and a mysterious reunion) but I'd rather see them in a more personal setting. Bamboozle is like a stadium thing. That's why I don't think I'm going to go to Warped to see them.

It's going to be like what War All The Time tried to do. On WATT, they tried to hard to write these epic, emotional anthems like "War All The Time" but they just came out sounding cliche.
bottlerocket
02-14-2006, 05:35 PM
^ I think Full Collapse was what they wanted War All The Time to do, but they wanted WATT to be "epic," like you said...I think this album will be taking FC and making it as epic as WATT while still being as good as FC, if not better...
FC > WATT

Awesome ok here it is. I'll be putting it up on at sputnik on May 2nd so any feedback concerning anything is helpful.
Thursday are my gateway drug.
Metaphorically, of course. I first listened to Thursday after reading a Featured Artist review on MX and bought War All the Time shortly after. At this stage of my life I had recently discovered the mainstream hardcore/pop infusions of bands like The Used, but still dabbled in extremely popular Nu-Metal acts such as Linkin Park and P.O.D.. Upon first listen I didn’t care much for the raw(WAtT was quite raw compared to what I was listening to at the time) sound but something about them enticed me to listen again, then again. Soon I was entranced by the suburban inspired lyrics, the unique guitar riffs and the chaotic yet often melodic vocals.
I was sure that this was it, that War All the Time was musical perfection. I was wrong. I searched forever and ever and finally found Full Collapse. This album did not leave my car cd player for at least a month in and a half. I was astounded that War All the Time could seem so weak in comparison to an earlier album.
So when Thursday went back into the studio to record ‘A City By The Light Divided’ I was quite anxious about what the result would be. When the six demo songs leaked I nervously downloaded them and listened to try and get a glance at what was to come. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety I heard in the demos and how fresh the felt. Finally, as the date of release neared, Thursday uploaded their entire album onto Myspace. I almost yelped in anticipation as I began listening to the first song. DId Thursday deliver? Can they top their masterpiece, Full Collapse? Or will this album fall short of even War All the Time? Since these are all opinions I’ll save them for the end. For now:
A City By The Light Divided
The album starts out The Other Side Of The Crash/Over And Out (Of Control), which is a response to Understanding In A Car Crash from Full Collapse. The song begins with the pounding, distorted guitars that have commonly opened up Thursday albums, then shifts during the verse to ambient guitar with a prominent bass line that moves as a melody along with the vocals. These musical aspects of the verse reflect that of Understanding In A Car Crash as well as some of the lyrics seem to look back at the song as a time of vocalist Geoff’s life, such as:
“Car crash came and car crash went, so I went along with it.”
The album moves along to Counting 5-4-3-2-1, which is the first single Thursday released. Echoed shouts of “5-4-3-2-1, what are you waiting for?” reverberate around you during the chorus and you can’t help but feel as though your caught up in some aggressive protest. Geoff shows that he still has quite a bit of writing talent in the second verse:
“All his life he lived in this same house.
Same white fence surrounding him, he swore he would get out.
But he cant cause his foot got caught in between in the rails.
And all his friends were all up ahead
They cant hear him yelling, yelling for some help.”
The song gets rather repetitive near the end and what you are left with in your head is yourself chanting 5-4-3-2-1 over and over again. This song just seems to rub me the wrong way, it seems too much like a theme song than something Thursday would do.
We take a jump from here to the mellow but passionate Sugar In The Sacrament. The guitar opens up with some medium tempo picking and builds into the chorus as Geoff’s voice pushes and pushes into the climactic chorus. The instruments drop out for the bridge and ambient sound pulses forward until Geoff cuts in with:
“This is all we’ve ever know of God, fly with me, let me touch you now”
Conviction grips his vocal performance and you can’t help but feel a shiver down your spine as he erupts with the final shouts of the song.
“Ok”, is how Geoff begins At This Velocity, a fast tempo song with fast riff changes and constant quick transitions between shout and scream. At This Velocity is quite relentless in it’s pounding until the bridge where it slows a bit, descending octaves and light melodic vocals set the mood for decrescendo of the song.
We Will Over Come opens up with some string texturing and almost skips the verse before launching into the choir backed chorus and then back into the verse. The song steadily slows down from its upbeat tempo until it recovers in the bridge where a contrast is formed between the chorus of voices and Geoff’s shouts.
Here is where the album splits, the song, Arc-lamps, Signal Flares, A Shower of White (The Light), seems to act as a intermission. Although it hasn’t been clarified for me there seems to be some concept that this song is the “Light” that divides the “City” in the album title A City By The Light Divided. The only really obvious difference between the songs on the first half and the second half is that the first seem to have more energetic, driven songs(with the exception of Sugar In The Sacrament) and the second half seems to contain the downbeat, yet epic songs. Anyway, this song is, disappointingly, bland and skippable as it is really only a simple keyboard riff backed by simple drums and some guitar noodling.
As we hit the second half of the album we are introduced to Running From The Rain. A song which, while it stands alone well, seems rather out of place on this album. Let me explain what I mean, Thursday’s music has always had a strong sense of contrast to it, the end of A Hole In The World featured the contrast of light piano chords to strong emotional screaming, Steps Ascending almost stops all sounds in the bridge to contrast the build up that follows, many of the songs on A City By The Light Divided also feature such sharp contrasts. Running From The Rain really doesn’t have any of that, it slowly builds and falls from verse to chorus. This makes the song seem like it probably shouldn’t be on the album, it’s a pretty good song with some powerful lyrics such as:
“So we forgot our names
lying in the tall grass
underneath the billboard dreams.”
But it just falls short of expectations.
Telegraph Avenue Kiss opens up with some strong lyrics then is joined by the rest of the band in a mid tempo march into and energy filled chorus. Near the two minute mark the song shifts and changes from being carried by a light mallet part to the angelic peaks of Geoff’s voice and makes for some interesting layering.
The album moves into one of it’s more powerful and epic songs, The Lovesong Writer. Opening with a soft simple guitar line, Geoff coons out innovative lyrics about an insecure artist. The chorus crunches down atop the verse and Geoff voice soars over the distortion with “The songs that he writes, are too personal, he can’t play them for anyone”. The bridge explodes with trading vocals and then Geoff singing “Sing for me, Sing for me, Sing for me now” and ends in prolonged static.
As we rush Into The Blinding Light it takes on a pulsating ride that feels like a nighttime roller coaster ride or a high speed car chase. Nothing particularly notable in this song happens until Geoff begins to sing “Please someone help me...” and the guitar shifts. The vibrant, speeding guitar and synth part at the end definitely gives a feel of motion and textures the song well.
The album concludes with possibly the longest song Thursday has ever done, Autumn Leaves Revisited. Starting softly and coming out strong at about the 1:30 mark then droping back down to the sounds of an acoustic guitar(Seriously? Thursday and acoustic have almost never been in the same sentence) before gradually crawling into a crecendo. The song ends with the lyrics:
“The leaves will fall
so will you
when you do bury me under them too
seconds pass we’ll make it through
eventually we all are going home.”
Overview:
Thursday set the bar high for themselves with War All the Time and more importantly Full Collapse. Did they deliver? It’s really up to you. You can compare A City By The LIght Divided to their previous releases with skepticism and claim it’s not really “Thursday”. My opinion is that this album is Thursday’s heart and soul, that even though some of the tracks fall slightly short of perfection, the ones that do hit the mark hit it high and make every second of this album worth a listen. Thursday IS a new band, having three years since War All the Time has definetly changed them, I think for the best.

I normally don't post in pop-punk... but that's a real kickass review. Nice job on that. Can't wait to get this album. My girlfriend hates Thursday and I burnt her a CD with Counting 5-4-3-2-1 on it and I didn't write her out a tracklisting... and she said she liked that song. It was so funny telling her that she liked new Thursday. haha

Bamboozle is in the parking lot. I don't know if they have any bands inside.

/Pumped about new album
I see how in the review, he pointed out the entire 'light dividing the city' thing with the interlude. I always thought full collapse had a theme to it, where it all started out as day time, and everyone lost hope until it turned to night, then the last true song ont he cd says 'if the suns on its way', and it goes back to day. I never looked into it, though, i probably should.

Yeah I've been thinking that too. It starts off with a car crash, I know that much heh. Then one line of How Long Is The Night? is "now the lungs collapse, air is getting thin" i think its basically a story of how the car crash affected the main character and what he went through then he fully collapsed.

Thats the problem though, i dont think it follows a specific story. I just think its a very broad concept dealing with day turning to night, then back again. Ill find more stuff about it then post later.

Musically Brand New have not really matured that much, the main difference between YFW and DE is atmosphear and lyrical content. In songwriting ability Brand New has taken leaps and bounds above anything they've previously done. In comparision to Thursday, I do believe it's hard to compare since they are almost entirely different, but if we were Thursday would excell above them in almost every category.

Yes, but just because they got a lot better between 2 cd's doesnt make them above someone who was always better than they were.
I really shouldn't get involved in this argument.

I have to admit the only reason I posted that I would walk from school was to try and be "cool". :upset: Let's just be happy that May 2nd is the big day. And to be honest I never really listened to Yellowcard that much, but if you like them and say they're good I'll go and give them another listen and then tell you what I think. Well the violinist has been in the band officially since their second release Where We Stand, but their first release Midget Tossing he only played on a few tracks and wasn't an official part of the band. I don't understand why people don't like him. I like the violin in the music.

I think the gap between FC and WATT was quite small though, but it still felt new and exciting. That's why I love both of those albums so much, since there is still an overwhelming Thursday-esque feel, but there's some new ideas and musicianship as well that makes WATT great.
I've tried getting into the new album a lot more, and it's hard for me. It trails off about halfway through, and every song just feels too downbeat. I like those songs, but in moderation, especially from a band with a reputation as big as Thursday's.

I really think War All the Time is their best album. Its got the best mix of the soft to loud thursday feel. But this new album is so much more, and i hate to use this word, Epic. It feels so large. Its like what Thrice did with their new record and i LOVE it. the new record is amazing
the only thing i am really dissapointed with is the lyrics on this one. They dont live up to the intensity of full collapse or the peotic merit of War All The Time. Still great though. And even though a lot of people said that WATT was overproduced, at least you could hear the vocals. Geoff's singing is almost impossible to hear when the music climaxes. That pisses me off

I've been saying that too since I heard the album. This album is all aobut being big, in your face, grandoise and epic. The songs have a stadium feel as opposed to the small feel of Full Collapse. The new album is overproduced no matter how you look at it. But unlike War All The Time, where I think the overproducing effectively killed the honesty and personality of Thursday's music in many cases, this album remains true. Despite being on a major label, I think Thursday stuck to their beliefs and made a very personal album devoid of popular influence.
I don't know what you're thinking in calling War All The Time their best album though. :-/

Full Collapse didnt do as much for me. Honestly i think WATT sounded more real and personal. Especially on tracks like Division St. where you can really hear Geoff throwing his soul out there. Full Collapse didnt have enough production value on it, and after I am the Killer i cant really get into the rest of the album for whatever reason. I love every track on WATT though.
WATT really did it for me, and was the main reason for me getting into thursday. I agree about FC not being as great as WATT. but still not a bad album

Other Side is definatly one of the strongest songs on the album and one of my favorites.
The bass is much louder on this album compared to any of their previous. I'm sure this was intentional and also think it was a good move. The bass lines of thursday have always been very good but are usually drasticly over shadowed, in the mix, by the guitars. Moving the bass up definatly allowed for new sounds and feels to come forth.

I think this is better than Waiting and War All The Time. But Full Collapse is better. Still A City By The Light Divided is amazing and better than most stuff out there right now. At This Velocity is my favorite Thursday song.
I finally have this!
I'm listening to it for the 4th time all the way through now. I think The Other Side Of The Crash is actually the weakest song along with Counting. The only part that stands out is the "don't look awaaaaaay" part, which is amazing.
Telegraph Avenue Kiss <3. I love the keyboards and lyrics in The Lovesong Writer and At This Velocity is just incredible all the way through. I would have likes some more back up vocals throughout the album though.
Oh and Tuckers drumming is amazing as always. But I think because of the production it just doesn't stand out as much. Same for Geoff's vocals.
How awesome is "Running From The Rain"? That song is incredible.
And the demo of "Telegraph Avenue Kiss" was ages better than the final product, I think.
Awesome CD though.

I've said this before in the H/E Forum but I think A City By The Light Divided is to Thursday what You Come Before You is to Poison The Well. They both intended to make their sound different and expand their ideas.
cbmartinez
05-21-2006, 03:18 PM
Eh, I don't really think so. You Come Before You was really a huge change for Poison The Well and showed them completely ditching the sound that had gotten them popular. Thursday has kinda embraced the whole major label, big band thing and kind of basked in their popularity. Definitely an incredible album though. Their second best in my opinion.
