Hey...i play bass and when i jam with my freinds...our drummer always drowns everything out...he plays SOO loud its ridiculous..like i know obviously drums are loud but like he doesn't know how to play a steady beat without beating the hell out of his drums..any suggestions i could tell him to help him play a bit softer but still steady...or have any of you ever had trouble with this?

no...he just sucks at listening obviously. Tell him that if he can't hear the band, then he's too loud. Playing in
a musical group is about listening... not hiding in your own musical corner.

thats what i said...the problem was...hes like a bad lead guitarists who always thinks he needs to be the one being heard..he can never keep it simple and play the same beat for a minute or two hes gotta add consatnt fills and fills until he finally just loses all tempo and gets too loud..the thing is hes real talented..like he has the ability but he just cant jam so im just wodnering if anyone here or people you know went throught he same issues

How long has he been playing?
like 2 years...the problem is the rest of the band is more funk-oriented and he got a double-bass pedal a while ago so all he does is bang away..real annoying and we cant get anything done...but hes like one of our best freidns so its tough...like occasionally i go play with some poeple i know that are drummers but its hard i think were just gunna have to work on him..or i'll wait until i go to college to get into a good band

..the thing is hes real talented..
that's subjective. Talent includes the ability to hear and play with a group... not just being fast or playing some complex rhythm.

I bet he wants to put solos in any recordings you do and he always hit crashes and stuff at the end of a song-wanting to be the last one heard? Am I right?

heh heh, i indulge in that sometimes but only when at practice, if we record we'll figure out good endings

100%...and to whoever quoted me on the talent thing...yea i know what you mean...and obviously oyu know more about it than i do but were both musicians..i;m tryin to say he has the ability to play well...he just doesnt..and its hard to see all that ability go to waste and uneeded/unwanted sound

yea, that kidna sucks that u have a drummer like that. a lot of drummers are like that too. Drummers are not the most important member in the band, their original pupose was to keep time for the rest of the musicians and just add in some stuff to accompany it too... but then again bassists were too :P
haha im just kidding, i play bass too
u should try to have a serious talk, and just be like look, what your doing is not what we are looking for, so try ot make a change or cya later.
hope that helps...

Get him to play the most basic rock beat he can...Then say..
"Alright, now play that for another 30 minutes, if you make even the slightest variation in tempo/notes played, then you're outta the band:P"
Learn some covers, something like AC/DC, and make sure you stress to him the importance of playing for the song. If he keeps going knuts, remind him that you are playing a very simple song. Teach him to play FOR THE SONG

not miced and i have more than enough wattage to play with..as well as our guitarists...and yes i know skill level doesnt matter if he cant use it but thats the thing...i want to help him begin to use it becasue i see a lot of potential in him

Make him play and stick to a simple song that gets the crowed pumped. Like Blur, song 2.

I hate drummers like that. My drummer is like that.
He plays way too loud and breaks way too many sticks. He rushes every song except when he gets tired (about 2 songs in). It is here he begans to slow down (in the middle of a song). After the song is over, he says he's thirsty and goes to get a drink. Of course, he never comes back.
The problem is he's my guitarist's brother so you know how that goes. I want to get another drummer but he keeps thinking something's going to change. He doesn't even show an interest in playing drums anymore. I can't change them so I'm currently looking for a new band... one with talented musicians who want to play.
Wish me luck. :)

If he isn't playing for the music, kick him out. It happened to me. The rest of the members felt it wasn't right. Admittedly, they didn't talk to me first, but they replaced me. Fair enough. If the drummer doesn't make the song feel right, tell him to change something or pack his bags. He'll get over it.
