the best drummer with a small kit would have to be animal from the muppets

Check out, well, just about every jazz drummer.

Elvin used to use a 4pc, Art Blakey used a 4pc. Buddy Rich used a 5, the list goes on and on of people using 4 and 5 peice kits.

"bonham has many kits, some are huge.
most of his kits are about the same size as buddy rich's"

Actually every single kit of Bonhams that I've heard of (except for his old Premier kit, of which the configuration is unknown to me) we're 5 peice kits. Those used on tour and in the studio were all 5 pieces, with two floor toms, being 16 an 18 inches, a 26 inch kick, a Ludwig Supraphonic 402 metal snare, and the mounted tom was sometimes a 14 sometimes a 15.
At his home, Ludwig gave him practice Vistalite kits, 5 piece again, but the picture that I've seen shows them as having two mounted toms and one floor tom. I do not know the dimensions nor the snare.
I have seen Bonham use a 4 piece, but it looked like it was his natural maple kit from the early early Zeppelin days, minus the second floor tom. In that video he also didn't have congas or a gong, both of which he usually had set up. I imagine it was the same natural maple kit, just without a few pieces for ease of transport to that particular gig, which was in France, if I recall.

Never saw Bonham use anything more than a 5 piece, unless you want to count the tymps and gong, or the congas and gong. Which I would not do, as they were, with very, very race exceptions, only used for his solos and where not integrated into the actual drum kit.

yeah! in the beggining of led zeppelin he had double bassdrum, two 26"x14" , floor tom 20"x18" and a big tom, i dont remember the exact sizes but, there were two bassdrums, check the one of the dvd's where it's an old communication breakdown video (actually there are like 5 of them).

A great drummer with few things is zoro snare, tom, bassdrum and floor tom, dos crashes, one ride and one hi hat, he's da grooviest

That's right, he did use double bass very early on for a very short period of time. Then the rest of the members hid his second kick drum from him.

Also, Ludwig gave him two very large floor toms, I think 20 and 22s, but I don't know that he ever used them.

"you must be joking! even my mum would laugh if you tell her: ''his grooves are pretty good...''"

Ahmir Thompson's grooves are good, though. They're really freaking good. He's with the Roots. He also has a drum'n bass side project. Philidelphia something or another.

i just lost some respect for you......

I'm pretty sure the majority of the advanced players around here think that while technically he doesn't hold his own against very many players, he is a fantastic player in his own right.

Ringo was way better than what he played with The Beatles. I've heard some drumming outtakes where he goes all ape**** on the drums, throws down some pretty fricken awesome grooves.

On top of that, Ringo has inspired more people to play than anybody (including me, and Ian Paice!) and is probably the most successful drummer of all time (which doesn't equate to quality, but is still a fact).

If you can be remembered 40 years after the highlight of your career, and still make successful solo albums, I think you are very proficient at what you do.

Ringo is in my top 5 drummers list. Up there with the likes of Mitch Mitchell, Keith Moon, Ian Paice, etc.

Ahmir Thompson I think is the most talented drummer. I have Phrenology, Things Fall Apart, and the Tipping Point, and his patience is just a gift itself. Lol people get mad at me when they come over and i play Star/Pointro or the Root 2.0. Stanton Moore I also Like, I have Ruckus and Vintage Reserve, both crazy albums. What somebody said about using two peice, three peice, is pretty true, He occasional puts a fill in there, but I think drumming shouldn't be about fills, just keeping the beat the whole song.

5-piece is NOT a small set. That's a normal drumset, many seem to have forgotten that in this age when everyone seems to think 'more is more'. There are lots of people playing a 4-piece set, I think that's a pretty ordinary choice too. 3-piece is small. Chris Pennie, the drummer of the Dillinger Escape Plan uses a 3-piece and he is a monster.

A 3-piece with a minimal cymbal selection would be a very good setup for practising. You can't concentrate on anything but the essential. I think it's fun too, to try a very different setup for a change.

Are you kidding me? Drumset sizes have gotten much smaller in the last 20 years. Sure you still got the likes of Mike Portnoy, but virtually all players I see use 6 pieces or less.

In the 70s, you had people like Keith Moon (who had 3 rows of toms in a semicircle), Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, Roger Taylor, and I could go on and on, who had massive drumsets. You couldn't be a rock drummer without at least like a 10 piece.

So yes, nowadays 5 piece is probably the normal size, but in the history of things, yes, it is small.

bonham always used a 5- piece kit with the same amount of cymbals, stop making up ****, he used lots of dif kinda percussion but same sized kits, except this one pic i got of him using a mini kit

5-piece is NOT a small set. That's a normal drumset, many seem to have forgotten that in this age when everyone seems to think 'more is more'. There are lots of people playing a 4-piece set, I think that's a pretty ordinary choice too. 3-piece is small. Chris Pennie, the drummer of the Dillinger Escape Plan uses a 3-piece and he is a monster.
yea man! i love those totally awesome long tom rolls he does.... down both toms!

who the fack do you think youre kidding? (all of you)

small kits = limiting :smash:

none that i know of. (besides Bonham)

Bonham used a three piece? That's friggin awesome..

And I think tiny kits work great for mostly jazz, but I'm not sure that it's easy to incorporate only three pieces into rock music. Certainly not metal that calls for heavy percussion.

no, the smallest he used was a 4 piece, usually a 5 piece.

What about Stanton Moore? Jabo Starks? Ziggy? Rich?

All those guys use 4 or 3 piece kits. Or do/did at some point. I'm pretty sure vince, weckl, etc could tear it up on a small kit.

Sometimes I like to just use 2 toms, 2 snares and a kit. It forces creativity within the music. With the pop stuff, you don't really need a big kit anyway since it's mostly about groove and feeling.

its obviously gonna be music dependant... it will force creativity, but it will also limit you. (perhaps to the point of boredom)

sure you can groove, but try playing some Rush fills on a 3 or 4 piece, etc :smash:

I wouldnt use anything more than a 7 piece.

Im comfortable with my 5 piece and have developed creativity to use all of the drums in fills.

With more than 5 it would be difficult to adjust quickly and I wouldnt know what to hit.

Alan Dawson used a 4 piece. And, in my opinion one of the greatest Jazz Drummers of his generation.

Matt Tong. He uses a 5 piece, in slightly unusual sizes, but still a 5 piece.

Although Chris Pennie recently moved to a 4-piece, older Dillinger when he did use a 3 was phenomenal. I like the way he put it in MD saying that it's good to switch up cause you have to learn new ways to do things thus increasing your creativity and, in turn, your skill. "Necessity is the mother of invention"...apply that to drums and you end up "inventing" new techniques.

?uest is definitely up there...he's not about chops or nothing but he's very experimental with his drumming yet very straight forward about it at the same time.

The problem with this thread, though, is you want inspiration from great drummers that use small kits but Chris Pennie, for example, is great because he makes a three piece sound huge. You'd go, "Man, I could never do that," and end up putting your toms back on. Just find out what works for you...drumming is a personal thing.

Also, I'd like to add most grindcore drummers, like the guys from Pig Destroyer, Cattle Decapitation, etc, they tend to use very small sizes and kits, and most of em can rip like no other, many have jazz backgrounds also.

you are one of those people who are instilled with the thought process of the old-school classical elite that the drummer is just there to keep time. Or you listen to music where there are no fills.

Drums are a musical instrument....use them as such.

Jeremiah Green(Modest Mouse) uses a 4 piece. Not a brilliant drummer, but a good, and may I quote from some member on this board, "Grooving" drummer.

Yes I do listen to music where there are hardly any fills or even fills at all, and I find it the most enjoyable to MY musical tastes. Sorry 'bout the comment if it was mean or whatever. It just that everyone seems to sorta lose their minds on here, and insult without hearing the proper side from the other person.

I could never get into the Who or The Beetles etc.. I like My Generation and Pinball Wizard by The Who. and uhh Imagine by John Lennon, but that's just about it. Maybe it's because I havn't been introduced to much stuff by them. I dig Led Zeppelin, Pink Flloyd, Hendrix, Dylan, Aerosmith in terms of rock. But what I mostly like is Drum N Bass, Funk. Jazz, and Hip-Hop to a certain degree.

More drums = More trips from your car to the stage.

a lot of drummers like using smaller kits if they gig a lot

I don't believe it's necessary to have a large kit to express yourself musically on the drumset. Big kits can be fun, but small kits offer you a challenge to make your drums and cymbals speak in numerous ways.
