I've always loved his playing-one of the early masters/developers of linear playing!

Exactly ^ People just bash them because they can't tune.

meh, they sounded good 'despite' of pinstripes, not because of them :thumb: but pinstripes would help to tone down those crazy oak customs

Quoted for irony?
Pinstripes are popular because of their 'wet' sound and the ease of tuning that comes with them. I think a lot of people who don't like pinstripes don't like them because of a kind of elitism. They are easier to tune and create a more focussed sound, so they're "not as good". I think PS's are ok, but not a patch on Emperors/G2's.

Great Player, I learnt how to play linear beats from his 'Future Concepts' book
...and he sounds great playing pinstripes. When I started playing there was a fashion for deader sounding drums. More recently people like more open sounding drums. One day, however fashion will change and everyone will be playing pinstipes again (I am quite partial to a coated pinstripe on my snare every now and then...)

I've never tried a coated pinstripe but I do like the coated PS3s for my snare. How would they compare?

He's an amazing player; I'm really diggin all that linear stuff, its really applicable to tons of musical genres.

No one does funk better then David Garibaldi... No one.
He's on my list of top 10 alive drummers.
Soul Vaccination is such a great grove. I can play What Is Hip? But that's still hard.

Great! glad to see everyone likes him. The cowbell grooving in that solo is sweet. Very 80's look though....
Im pretty sure he plays birch recording customs though. or at least he does now.

Hmm, i think Harvey Mason is on-par with David Garibaldi as the best funk drummer alive.

Indeed, I love those bikkies :D
I was actualy considering going back to pins or powerstroke 4s, I've never had a better sound on my drums then with those heads, so warm and easy to play. But, ye, a bit dead for today really. Either those or I'll stay open and try Evans coated G1. I'm not that happy with the G2's I've got on. Nathaniel Townsley get's a great sound and I believe he uses G1's on that modern drummer 2003 DVD. Anyway, I digress.

I'm a classic rock kid as well, and ToP are not classic rock. They're classic funk and some of their stuff can be concidered early R&B.

Tower of Power is definatley funk...the real essense of funk. Thats one of those non-debatable classifications.
Anyway, yeah, I LOVE garibaldi and Top. I saw them last October, and they are still as tight and funky as ever.

classic rock isn't a genre....its an era
ToP fits in that era....at least the early part of their career
But meh whatever...they ARE funk, no doubt about that.

Yeah, but tower dont sound like classic rock, thats the thing, so they dont fit into the genre. Sure they may have been in the same time or era as classic rock, but they do not sound like classic rock.

I've always been hearing the talk of "linear" beats and playing when he gets brought up, what does that mean, not swung, or something?

When no two voices are played at the same time. Let's take a nice funky paradiddle groove to fit the occasion

Linearly, that would be:
