View Full Version : Riffs you always end up playing

What are some riffs that you may or may not have learnt for a laugh which you always end up playing?
I'll give an example: I first learnt Beat It as a joke between myself and a friend. I play most Friday's at a youth program and I must have played that riff 200 times. Seeing how its rather recognisable and sounds good when the bands in sync i'm glad I learnt it.
This may also be a chance for you to tell us about all the pop basslines you learn under the cover of a blanket and torch.

I always played the riff for Rearranged. But I don't do that anymore.
If I do end up accidently playing something, it's the Scrapple From the Apple melody line. I spent 2 months straight playing that at every speed possible and in every key when I was auditioning for uni. It's kinda stuck to me.

I play Ice, Ice Baby quite a bit. Also, Californication is the first riff I ever learned, so it has stuck with me quite well. Another one is some random song by Afi, I can't remember the name of the song but I play it every time I practice.

I always end up playing the chorus line from one of Bassguy's competition entries. Not that that's a bad thing.:thumb: Or bits and pieces of Take The Veil by the Mars Volta, mostly the solo, or Heart of the Sunrise by Yes.
On guitar I end up playing the intro and main riff from Siberian Khatru by Yes, bits of the solo from Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 or the theme from The Good, The Bad and The Ugly a lot.
 Neal will hate me for this post.

That funky guitar intro to Stayin' Alive by the Beegees, the intro to the Rancid cover of Stickin In My Eye, Money by Pink Floyd.
At band practice we'll be rocking along to some Clash cover or whatever, and then all of a sudden the drummer will swing into the intro for John The Fisherman, and the rest of us have no option but to join in, that song's so damn catchy! This happens so often at practice that we accidentally did it at our latest gig too.
Also, there's a break in one of our songs called USA AOK where when we play it live we break into a parody of American Idiot, where we all try and jump around like Greenday while shouting and screaming indescipherable lyrics like "RANANANANAHANAH AMERICA" before ripping back into the chorus of our song. Say what you will about Greenday, but that song allways makes me jump.
