Are you sure it wasn't just the string snapping out of tune? It happens when you don't string it properly and overlap the string over itself. It'll slip and go flat. Is that what happened?

The only time I've heard a huge crack was after I just tuned to C started playing and my nut broke (the piece that holds the string right before the first fret) so check that it might have snapped somewhere.

Might have been a slip in the neck to body joint

Did you tune your E down to a C or up to a C?

How can anything like that happen to a bass if you tune a string down (loosen it)!? If you tuned up to C I can understand it, but that wouldn't be very smart in the first place now would it.

^^^ im not sure but i think the correct name is "action" well its that thing on the body of the bass you higher and lower the strings closer or farther away from the fret board and pick up. Usually on those little things they have indents for the strings to go. My guess it that you missed it and the string was just laying there. And when u were tightning the strings all the tension of the string being pull make it "pop" into place with a load bang....yea i think thats it lol

if the intonation was out.. as compared to the way it might have been previously, then it sounds like something in the bridge has moved, or your neck has done something horrible.
but its just weird.... unless it was just a 'relief' crack from the neck/string going from a higher tension to a lower tension.
im hoping you were tuning each string as you went, rather than making one in tune and leaving the rest.
if you're gonna tune it crazy-high, why dont you buy thinner strings?

maybe your truss rod moved, sometimes when you adjust it it makes a crack sound as it moves out o its set position
