how do emgs and pickups work?

Are they the same thing?

When placing them on yourbass, does it matter where you put them?

EMG's are a brand of pickups. They usually are active although they make passive ones also. They would be installed where your current pickups are located.

Talk about weird this is the first time ove been on this site in about a year and today i just installed my brand new Passive EMG's and the sound incredible.
anywho i know that if you do want new pups you should go with EMG's so you are on the right track. placement is usually not an option depending on the bass you have. and EMG makes it real easy to install. What bass do you have?

How pickups work. Thier are usually strong magnets (those metal round things) and thier connected to some crap. Well when you play the metal strings it interfiers with the magnetic wave or field (i duno the correct turm.) And well since the magnetic field is screwed up it sends the signal to the cord to the amp and lets the noise out (i hope u understand) The reason why they have different sounds is because the different vibrations are caused on different strings.

yeah its something like that :]

It does matter where you put them, generally speaking the closer to the neck you put them the bassier/muddier the pickup will be.

so if you put the pickups closer to the neck it makes a muddier sound? I usually play close to the bridge w/ my pick.

So emg's are a brand of pickups?

for most basses you dont have a choice on where to put them cuz theres allready a hole cut out for them. if not have some fun moving the pups around
