I know this thread is obscure, guys, but keep spam to a minimum. :thumb:
Double thumbing is like using your thumb as a pick almost...you move it up and down really fast with your whole arm.
Just watch a video on it or something. It's tough to explain.

IS it all with ur thump (like thumping it down and then coming back across the string).

^ You mean thumb? :p
Yeah, I use my thumb for the actual object to pick the strings but use my whole arm/wrist in the motion up and down...it's a lot easier.

I cant do it, but i can tell you the same those that those who can play it would...
Practice... it's not like one day they one day, they suddenly were givin the power to play it? you have to sit down, practice... try again, and again and again... it takes some longer than others. but it's not impossible

It took me about a week to get the technique down and a year or so to actually do something musical with it! Keep that in mind when learning this technique.

It is a tricky technique to get used to but like anything it just takes practise. How wooten does the triplets is by hitting a dead note with his thumb going down, a hammer on on to a fret and then he hits that fretted note when he brings his thumb up. Most people just hit an open string though instead of a dead note at the start of each triplet, makes it alot easier and still sounds good.
So say just practise on the E string going:
E|0h3-3-0h3-3- etc
So you hit the open strng when your thumb goes down, before you pull the thumb up you hammer on the third fret and while you're still holding on to it you bring your thumb up. Then experiment, do it on different strings and different frets, blah blah.
Another good excercise is scales. Simply play a scale and do double of every notes before moving to the next and do it with the double thumb motion.
For Example:
G|------------------------6-6-8-8-9-9--
D|----------6-6-7-7-9-9----------------
A|7-7-9-9------------------------------
E|-------------------------------------- Do it going back down as well.
Hope this helps to get used to double thumbing, I wouldn't suggest attempting classical thump for a while before you are used to the technique.

It took me a few weeks for the technique to click, but I have yet to develop the skill to a point where I can use it tastefully.

I don't know why everyone on this forum says this is how it's done, because I don't know one bassist that actually does it this way. I know that's how Vic describes it, but even he doesn't actually do it that way.
Treat it almost like regular slapping, except make more of a swiping/slashing motion. But the biggest difference is, instead of pulling away from the string right away, go THROUGH the string. So if you're slapping the A-string, go downwards THROUGH the A and stop your thumb on the D. Then as you bring your hand up again to pop the G-string, your thumb should hit the A again before your finger makes the pop.

yea, thats the the hard part. I can do the technique, but when it comes to making something musical with it? Then I'm screwed, i have to work on that ALOT more.
