Let's say that we are in concert key F major and we need to transpose the piece for a alto saxaphone, would the key signature now be D major?

Are you asking about transposing French Horn parts in to alto parts?

EDIT: Your post was confusing

i'm assuming you mean an Eb alto sax. Thats 3 half-steps above middle C.

So if its in F, then it would become the key of Ab.

Eb is 6 steps... So I had to transpose a piece in concert F major to and Eb instrument. My issue would it be Db major or D major?

I believe so... I'm not sure exactly what concert key is, but I know whenever I played with a sax player, I would have him play in the relative minor key (but major)... hmmm. C would become A... G would become E, etc.

Hopefully we're right...

Yes you are right. I do this every sunday morning at my church. I get chords above the lyrics and I transpose in my head each chord. Since you're in F it will go to D. C would go to A. Bb would go to G#. B to G. and so on. If you need help I wouldn't mind to help at all. My email is sax4trent@yahoo.com if you have any problems. :thumb:

Other direction... ;)

So it would become the key of D.

EDIT: I'm a dummy. Sax4trent already kindly clarified things.

Correction of previous:
Bb goes to G.
B goes to G#
Alto sax is an Eb instrument, so it plays 3Halfs above a piano or flute.
Hence to compensate, the music is written 3Halfs below piano or flute.
Piano and flute are C instruments.
So it is true that F goes down to D because the Alto sax plays the D so it sounds 3Halfs higher than D, which is an F.
