so, iwas playing the drums and i heat the snare. I hit it a little bit harder than normal, but not too hard. At first i don't notice anything, but then when i hit the snare again it sounds really out of tune. So i stop playying and tighten it up, but that doesn't help. So i look under the snare and the bottom head is broken. I was expexting the top head to break any day since i've had it for a long time, but the bottom one broke. How did this happen?

Too tight, possibly.
Also, over time heads wear down.

i don't think so.
Your not supposed to heat your snare:)
it was probably just too tight.

Or tuned high in some places, and not quite as high in others.
You might consider buying a new one..:)

or it might just a crappy, flimsy snareside head altogether

Don't snare side heads break much more easily then the batters?

Also had this once...
Something a lot of drummers don't know (or just forget) is that the thin reso's in general wear down faster then batters. Also, snare heads generally are pretty thight and tuned quite high. If you don't replace them in time, stuff like this happens. The impact on snare reso's is also a lot bigger then you might think. Plus it's the drum that you use the most compared to toms.
Just make sure to replace it in time in the future.
If the head was fairly new, it could also be caused by a production fault. A little teeny tiny hole or rip in it and stuff like this is the result.

Are you sure your snare reso wasn't resting on the stand in an awkward position with metal digging in?

To be fair it has to deal with the snare wires hitting it all the time.

'A little harder than normal' is how hard? You may have over compressed the drum.

free basing snare drums does that to you sometimes.

next time, tune that snareside EXTRA well -- because it's sooo thin, it breaks VERY easily.
