View Full Version : Beatles or Rolling Stones?
So, who does everyone think is better, The Beatles, or the Rolling Stones? Personally, I think the Beatles are better. Discuss.
False paragraph to trick n00bs into reporting this into problems thread, lol
Neil Young once said in an interview: "What I've done is I've taken rock and roll and divided it into 2 sides. Beatles and Rolling Stones"
Interviewer: "Buffalo Springfield?"
Neil: "Beatles."
Interviewer: "CSNY?"
Neil: "Beatles"
Interviewer: "Crazy Horse?"
Neil: "Rolling Stones."
Interviewer: "Pearl Jam?"
Neil: "Rolling Stones."
What I'm asking you is what bands do YOU classify as Beatles or Rolling Stones and why. Also, maybe we could have a little discussion on this, and talk about it.
As per all my usual threads, I'll compile a list in this post, and the one after.
I'll kick things off with:
Radiohead : The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Jack Johnson
Jeff Beck
Arcturus
Pink Floyd
Dave Matthews Band
Simon and Garfunkel
Bob Dylan
The Band
Beach Boys
The Rolling Stones
Deep Purple
Cryptopsy
Cream
Radiohead
The Who
13th Floor Elevators
John Mayall's Bluesbreakers
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Boston

Yeah, I was reading it in finals today, and I thought it'd be cool to get others opinions. If anyone hasn't figured out the analogy, I'll be happy to try to explain.

John Lennon: Beatles
George Harrison: Beatles
In all seriousness now:
Jack Johnson: Beatles
Bruce Springsteen: Both
Deep Purple: Stones

The Who: Rolling Stones.

Yeah it's pretty tough to explain. It mostly has to do with the rawness(???) of the band. I know rawneess isn't a good word to use but I can think of any others right now.
I also think he is judging by each bands earlier careers because that's when both were both easier to classify. Beatles more of a pop band more of a good boy image and the Rolling Stones playing more blues influenced rock/pop and were more potrayed as "bad boys".
Hard to explain, but that's my idea about this.
Hard to explain, but that's my idea about this.
I always thought of it as your way and kind of like The Rolling Stones did whatever they wanted and they didn't really care about the critics.

Jeff Beck- The Beatles (creativity)

I agree with Livewired more.
It's like whether you're on one end of the spectrum, Pop Rock, or the other end, Hard Rock. Each of these respective bands pioneered the sound in each of these sub-genres.
Jeff Beck- The Beatles (creativity)
I'd say Rolling Stones because he was so diversive and did whatever.

I think Jeff Beck could go under the necessary 3rd category, Pink Floyd.

Yeah that's why I chose Beatles. Beck's stuff with the Yardbirds and Jeff Beck group was heavy blues-rock much more similar to The Rolling Stones. But then he started experimenting with jazz-fusion and such. Now the Beatles never experimented with jazz fusion or anything like that, but The Beatles were much more experimental than the Stones. So even though Jeff Beck sounds absolutely nothing like The Beatles, he reminds me more of The Beatles because of his creative skill and constant experimentation. I don't know if that makes any sense, but whatever.
Simon and Garfunkel- Beatles

i think radiohead would be more in the beatles category. they arent that poppy but they can be pretty melodic. at least the earlier stuff. and they are more experimental like the beatles.

Pink Floyd - Beatles
Led Zeppelin - Eh... Both, depends on what album/song in all honesty
Cream - Rolling Stones
Dave Matthews Band - Beatles
Grateful Dead - Really tough one... Beatles for creativity, experimentation, etc., Rolling Stones for straight rockingness and "rawness" or I guess less-producer'd sound.
I've done mine, let's see yours :p

Exactly. They're the Stones.
I'd disagree. They're very experimental and have the same creative attitude of The Beatles. I'm not saying The Rolling Stones weren't creative, but they found success with hard blues-rock and stuck with it for the most part.

If I were to pick I'd put them under Beatles. I think that the transition from OK Computer to Kid A kind of resembles the Beatles going from Help! and Rubber Soul to albums like Revolver and Sgt. Peppers. Kind of like building up a fan base on a more mainstream sound then taking their music in a whole other direction with experimentation.
Their music also reminds me more of the Beatles even though saying that seems kinda weird to me.

In every way you can think of. Keith Richard is considered a guitar great. What Alexi consider? Another mediocre metal guitarist. Alexi has very little originality, he relies very heavily upon old material. I really don't like the stones but the atleast have differentation between songs. Drumwise there is no contest. CoB drowns out there drums for crying out loud. Stones can keep a rythm that is contrary to the melodies rythm. Neither Mick or Alexi can sing. Lyrically Stones are amuch higher level. They right lyricals that actually have symbolism. Again CoB Drowns out there bass and even then the bassist just plays root.

they're better songwriters. period. it's not even a question. mick jagger is and was a first class frontman. possibly the finest in rock music. hihs voice is distinctive. keith richards is a great guitarist. very influential. talented not because of his speed, but because he was experimental and played around with different tunings. much the same way nick drake is considered a great guitarist. not that i would expect you to know about that. he's tasteful. ronnie wood and mick taylor are amazing guitarists. mick played with john mayall, you know, the group that clapton was in after the yardbirds and before cream? charlie watts is a talented drummer. perhaps deceptively, but he really is. try playing honky tonk women if you don't believe me. collectively, they have a solid claim to greatest rock and roll band in the world.

You are truely a great musician if you can make the majority of people dance to you (with the exception of classical musicians)......oh noes, I expect a comeback of "well so-so can play 24/7 polyrhthms and he is quite happy with himself playing in his garage and in front of 10 fans at the local theatre"....well good for him, but thats nothing more than a hobby.

Personally:
I think the Rolling Stones are an awesome band. They write great music lyrically, have great guitar talent, a relatively good drummer and bassist, and a great singer IMO. Their unbelievable longevity as a band and a pop culture icon adds to their credibility. I still don't rank them especially high compared to other bands that I personally like more (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, etc.), but that's almost like comparing triple-meat pizza to secks for me. I am really glad that the NFL let them play at the Super Bowl, it's honestly one of the best bands they could've had in my mind. Although, like I said in some other thread, The Who for '07 \m/
CoB is not one of my favorite bands. Of course I'm not a metal fan, so that obviously makes a difference. But just because I don't especially like their music doesn't mean I don't appreciate their talent. I think that the "metal" sound often overrides complex musical arrangement for straight hardness, but their speed and syncronization as a band is very admirable. I can definitely see how CoB is good, even if I don't really like them per se.

Uh, no and a no.
Alrighty then... AC/DC - The Beatles...I guess Day Tripper is closer to AC/DC's riff's than any of the stones? (The Beatles do have songs heavier than any of the stone's, thanks for pointing that out.)
Oh for the record Stones>Beatles. Its a proven fact!

wait, so now classic rock is bad? i'd like to know what classic rock you listen to.
you can't win with this. not when we're around.
Classic rock I listen to would be,
The Doors
Pink Floyd
The Beatles are alright in small doses.
I don't listen to much though.
Eagles are good in small doses.

Yes - Beatles
Counting Crows - Beatles, just because it's practically all slow beautiful ballads or catchy pop stuff :)

You think anyone in the rolling stones could play Janne's keyboard melodies and solos?
Um, point out to me where the keyboard player in the stones is you moron.
You think your beloved Keith Richards could play any of Alexi's guitar riffs or solos?
no.
Um Keith Richard's has been playing guitar since the 60's, he's got at least 30 years on Alexi. So Im pretty sure not only could Richard's play the riff's and solo's, but I'm pretty sure they would sound better.
COB are not gonna last as long as the Stone's and that doesn't need to be argued. The Stone's were very popular in their day, COB are in there day, and they are still not popular. They are generic crap, the Stone's did something original. You probably don't think it's original cause other band's sound like them, but that's because it's been 40 years since the Stone's started.

stones are solid for classic rock , I'm not a fan of classic rock. Hardly.
I do think it's kind of stupid how anything about talent turns to "Alexi Vs the world".
If a CoB fanboy doesn't mention it, someone does.... Then the CoB fanboys arrive and notice eventually. Let the fireworks begin.
I'll try and refrain from being to much of a fanboy in threads other then CoB. :chug:
