All resident trombone players, post here, post your favorite pieces or stuff.
While I'm typing, I might as well let you all know that I am the second best trombone player in the state. Technically. See, I've been practicing for this thing called All-State, which is a band that only the best of the best get into. And it's a great oppurtunity and getting into it can land you a music scholarship. Well if you do make it into All-State, you go to two different events: Honors Band and All-State. At Honors Band, you go to this college and a band director (there's a different one every year) teaches the band 4 to 5 pieces of music in one day, then the next day the band performs it (a great oppurtunity to get discovered by someone). Then at All-State, if you make it, I think it's the same thing, except harder music and less people in the band (only the absolute best). What you can get in for trombone:
Red Band
1.
2.
White Band
3.
4.
Blue Band
5.
6.
Honors Band
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.
13.
The top six is All-State. Red is the best, white is second best, and blue is third best. The rest go to Honors Band only.
I made second chair Red Band. :):):)
(im so happy :D)

i was the only euphoniumist in the honor band i played in, so that boosted my ego. i wish i tried out for all-state but i've never had a private lesson in my life so i'm lacking in the education department. i know 3 trombonists that made all-state from my highschool this year. its pretty crazy

It was pretty funny, I got 2nd chair Euphonium in our All-District Honor band, then I went to state and got 1st chair All-State. The guy who beat me at Honor Band didn't do so hot, and I actually had to even then play his solos for our concert. I thought it was funny because it showed that our judges couldn't tell **** for districts.

That's about the truth. The judges secretly look at pron and do crosswords rather than actually judge correctly.
tromboning is hard i have mad respect for brass since i tried cos my bro got a trombone haha

It just takes some getting used to. :) Once you distinguish the notes and learn some scales, it becomes second nature.

I was in the middle school All-Suburban jazz band for St. Louis county in Missouri on trombone...I had a crappy try out so I only made third chair, even though the first part player thought that I deserved first. I actually like playing third or second part better than first, so it was fun. They don't have All-State band for middle school here in Missouri.

I play trombone in my school's concert and jazz bands. I've never bothered trying out for any of the more prestigious bands because a.) I think I'm **** and would bring the band down and b.) because I hate big bands. Bebop 4 lyfe.

I play the trombone in my school's stage band. I play flute everywhere else. Our director would not let me play flute in the stage band, so I play trombone and solo on flute.

Yeah but when you get into High School you can audition for All-State. Ill most likely meet you at auditions for all-state bass trombone here in Missouri. Ill be a senior next year and am hoping to make it.

Key of Bb, like a trumpet. Its a common argument that trombonists get into, because they hate the term slide trumpet. We prefer soprano trombone.

I started playing trombone in 5th grade, quit in 9th, but I was compelled to pick it up again in 12th grade. Now after learning bass, guitar, ukulele and harmonica I have great respect for the trombone.
It is so much fun to play if you have an ear for it, otherwise I would imagine it would be pretty awful
Do any of you do New Orleans Jazz? I am in a local outdoor brass band and we do stuff like that, no written music or anything, it's great

is the color more similar to trombone or trumpet? I'm guessing trombone. hahah soprano trombone. I like it. another question:
Is trombonium and valved trombone or what?
Stan Kenton always put his trombone section to good use...They had such a brutal and raw sound...Big band metal \M/

The Soprano Trombone, is described as a bit more mellower than a trumpet, because of the fact that there are less bends in the tobing, and the bends that it has are not as sharp or close. But... It is not as mellow as a Flugelhorn, so its somwhere in between a Fluglehorn and a Trumpet.
Both JJ Johnson and Kai Winding played Tromboniums at one point or another. They are basically valve trombones, with a more conical bore, meaning the tubing gets progressively bigger as you get towards the bell. But it is not as conical as a Euphonium, but not as straight as a single bore trombone. This creates a more dark, mellow sound, and is easier to play in the higher registers.
Technically they are valve trombones, but King popularized the term "Trombonium".

Valve trombones as a substitute for a regular trombone is disgusting and a waste of time IMHO. There are very few valve trombone players that I would ever consider very good and worth listening to.

I played the trombone for 2 years, not too good at it.
1 year in Marching Band.
1 year in Jazz Band. I did have a solo, but I don't like solo becuase I am not used to it. I am more a string and Orchestra person. I played violin.

I just auditioned for the School of Music at Central Michigan University. I don't think I made it, and it's kind of depressing. :upset:
