Something is eating up my CPU. I have a decent CPU (I think) and for example, I go to the task manager and it shows 100% CPU for like 1 second, then it goes on between 5-10%, when I have nothing major running. I keep the monitor open and start Steam, and it bounces from 30 to 50%! And even when i'm running Firefox, there's way too much CPU being used.. What could be causing this?
ps: I am new to xp since I used a mac forever
CPU during steam startup (it's been worse): CPU Steam (http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/5881/cpusteam8rm.jpg)
Now starting up Steam while scanning for spyware: steam+scan (http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/3584/holyshiycpu6yd.jpg)

You could/should get rid of about 20 of those active processes.

In those screen shots, it said "Processes 55".
Also, mine does that spike up thing too. It runs games fine and all that jaz just when I go to the Task Manager my CPU Usage spikes up for a second. I don't think its a problem.

Go back to the Mac :thumb:
Or end the processes. Can't imagine what they'd be... =\

I don't think that matters. My old PC used to have a ton of active processes. There was a significant difference when I cleaned it out. My gaming pc only has 25 processes running when it's idle and that's with a firewall and an antivirus program active.
On a different note, what is pinkbike.com and why are you browsing it?

Open up your task manager, click on the Processes tab and look for rundll32.exe.
It's a process that's used to run dll files as independent programs by Windows and it also assists in automatically updating your system. However, it can also hide trojans, spyware etc.. and on top of everything else, it's a memory hog and it can cause some programs to crash, others to refuse to open and it can cause your CPU usage to spike at 100% on a fairly regular basis. End this task every time you log on and you should be fine.

So, some of these processes can be removed, and it will increase the speed of your PC?

You should only end a process if you know exactly what it's doing, if you go around killing off processes you think that you don't need, you can end up making everything unstable and ****ing other things up.

I'd love to watch you fail at that.
What are your PC specs anyway?

CPU usage jumping for a second when opening a program is perfectly normal. Even if it jumps to 100%. And the sustained CPU usage during a scan is normal, also. The first is me opening my music service, the second scanning for spyware:

http://img497.imageshack.us/img497/6974/kki4jk.jpg
Just moving the cursor back and forth across your screen will make CPU usage jump wildly. That's normal. So far as the sustained usage of between 5% and 10% simply take a look at your processes and see which one is doing it. Could be a legit program. Perhaps one you don't need running in the background or a service you don't or aren't using. I used to have a security program that would run in the background at 3% to 6% constant with occasional jumps to 8%. After I unloaded it it went to the normal 0% to 2%. And you do have far too many processes running. Most likely a lot of stuff that is starting with your computer. I use MS Anti-Spyware to prevent programs from running at start up. It makes it easy.
You have way too many processes running. Learn what they are and eliminate accordingly. And simply managing your start up programs will help you do this, also. Here is a good place to start to learn what all those things in your process tree are:
http://www.answersthatwork.com/
Click on "Task List" and then on the initial the .exe of the respective process starts with. Then simply find it from the list.

1. What CPU is it?
2. Try running Prime95 blend test, if it fails before 6 hours, your CPU is gonna die. If it lasts for over 24 hours it's not the CPU
