Anyone else in here play mandolin? I have an ANTIQUE Kay Kraft ... just wanted to know if there are any fellow players in here.

The other guitarist in my band has one. We used it on our EP, but I'd hardly call him a mandolin player

I have a really old one. But four of the tuners are totally rusted, so I don't play it.

I have a Kentucky A-style mandolin. I've been playing it a lot lately, trying to get into playing blues with it.

Everybody who bought a mandolin so they could play Losing My Religion raise their hands. :chug:

Sweet... I've been working on Clapton's unplugged Layla on it lately. Somewhat easier to play than on guitar.

They only come in 8 strings (except for electric mandolins, you don't want that). For the price you're going to want an A-style, the F-styles are a bit more.

I can definitely recommend the mid-range Kentucky mandos (2xx, 3xx series), you should be able to find one in that range. But find a music shop that carries lots different ones, play some high end things (the K-style Breedlove Quartz will make your jaw drop, and your wallet will drop $2k too) so you get a feeling for how bad or not so bad the lower-end ones things.

I would stay away from the $100 pieces, if you can get into something with solid wood on all sides (not just top) you'll be glad.

Apparently I'm getting a mandolin soon, not sure what kind though.

I have a Fender acoustic/electric that I got for Christmas. It's so much fun and I'm getting a lot better on it. I hope to learn all the essential country instruments.

Whats the cheapest mandolin you can get that isnt a piece of crap? I want to start playing but I dont want to invest too much into one.

People have said the cheap Rogues are ok. I think you're going to lose a lot of volume by going with something that isn't made out of solid wood but it should be enough to get you going. But I've never run across anything that cheap ($30?!?) in music shops so I can't offer any first-hand advice.

But I will say this... I spent a lot more than I wanted to at the time on mine and I've never regretted it, except when I played a Breedlove Quartz model and wished I'd plunked down $1200 instead of $250. Someday.

do you know if the rogue acoustic/electric mandolin ( i think it goes for like 80 on Musicians Friend) is built any better?

Well, they at least mention what wood that is made from (the cheap models are plywood). I think you're talking about the 80E model. Looking thru the reviews for the Rogue mandolins it looks like the people who bought the $30 model are happier than the ones that paid $100. All of them complain of badly assembled instruments.

Whatever you get, if it seems discouraging go find a music shop that has at full wall of mandolins and try a few decent ones. I would hate for someone to give up because the $30 plywood box they tried first wasn't playable.

Oh no im not discouraged to pay a measly 30 dollars for it, i was just willing to spend the 70 more to get a better quality Mandolin, but i'll probably go for the 30 one if thats what people enjoy, every music shop ive been to around here only carry more expensive mandolins.

I never thought there would be a thread for mandolin players. I absolutly love bluegrass and play my mandolin as much as I can. Its kinda weird because I play mandolin and I play blues and metal guitar. anyways mandolin rocks my face off!!

I like bluegrass too. I play banjo, and got a mandelin this past Christmas. Its a great sounding instrument. I like the solo the mandelin player has in the song Rocky Top.

Oooo a mandolin thread n.n

I have myself an Epiphone F-style mandolin. Only got it a month ago but using my guitaring skills im picking it up quick smart :D The only problem is I havn't a clue what traditional mando music is sposed to sound like, so I'm just composing what ever.

Actually if anyone has alink to free mando music I could download that'd be awesome n.n

p.s; mando's rock

So I got a Mandolin today.

Tuning it was the most unpleasant experience of my life but I got through it.

I don't even know if I'm meant to play it with a pick or my fingers though, I haven't had much luck making it sound good with either :(.
