CKY is a band from West Chester Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, most people know of this band through the Bam Margera, MTV’s Jackass or their DVD’s (similar to Jackass). What most people don’t know is that they are a good band. Most people write them off because Bam consistently whores them and they have a care free sense of humor. Fortunately, their care free mentality does not transfer into their music. CKY, short for Camp Kill Yourself, is made up of Deron Miller (vocals, guitar), Chad Ginsburg (lead guitar, backing vocals), Jess Margera (drums), and Matt "Dice" Deis (bass). It is hard to define CKY’s sound. They have pop-rock style ballads like “Close Yet Far” and hard rock style songs like “All Power to Slave”, “96 Quite Bitter Beings” and “Escape from Hellview.” I just call them rock because of this.
In 1994, the band began as “Foreign Objects” in West Chester Pennsylvania. The band was formed by Jess Margera and Deron Miller. They released an EP in 1995 entitled “The Undiscovered Numbers & Colors”. The sound was described as “Earth Crisis (a nu-metal band from Syracuse New York) meets Rush.” They changed the name to Oil in 1996 and then it became Camp Kill Yourself (or CKY). In 1998, Bam Margera was featured in a skateboard video, skating to a Foreign Objects song (the song is entitled “Genesis 12a”). The song got them some underground acclaim and encouragement to enter the studio.
Later that year, they added Ryan Bruni (Bass) to the bands line-up. When they went into the studio, they met Chad Ginsburg. Chad was a producer working at the studio. After they recorded the “"Disengage the Simulator" demo, Chad knew he wanted to be part of the band. In 1999, Bam released another skate video with the entire sound track dedicated to CKY. That same year, they released Volumes 1 and 2 (two separate cd’s) and was featured in Tony Hawk’s Proskater for the Nintendo 64. They band became huge. They became one of the biggest bands over night that did not have a record deal. The instant success of the video game and their song led them to perform on the 1999 Warped Tour (Their early material was mainly punk influenced.). Before one of the performances, Ryan Bruni (Bass) had a fallout with the band and was replaced with Vern Zaborowski. Unfortunately, the band was kicked from the tour “after a protest in St. Louis over the prices the tour's vendors were charging.”
In 2000, they were singed to Volcom Entertainment record label and reissued Volume 1. That deal did not work out and the moved to Island Records in 2001. In 2002, they released their follow up album Infiltrate-Destroy-Rebuild after much delay. Towards the end of 2002, CKY landed the intensely sought-after opening slot on Guns N' Roses' national tour after being handpicked by Axl Rose. Not too long after the tour with G’N’R, they were invited to play with Metallica. Talk about making it fast.
“In 2003, they released a DVD which contained music videos for each of the tracks on the Infiltrate-Destroy-Rebuild album plus "Disengage the Simulator" and "96 Quite Bitter Beings" off of Volume 1.” Then in 2004, bassist Vern Zaborowski left the band due to personal and performance issues. This was when they were going into the studio to release Infiltrate-Destroy-Rebuild; however, both Chad and Deron can play bass so it didn’t affect the recording process. Matt Deis was chosen to be the replacement bassist. He is formerly of the metalcore based band All That Remains. An Answer Can Be Found was released June 28, 2005 and debuted at #35 on the Billboard Album Charts. Not bad for a rock band today.
