View Full Version : The Minutemen

I haven't made a thread for awhile, and this band seems worthy of a thread right now.

I've recently been really obsessed with them. Before I wasn't a huge fan and only had heard Double Nickels on the Dime once or twice in it's entireirty. But recently I put on the Minuteflag EP (a colloboration between Black Flag and them) and was amazed, so I started getting more and more and listening to them. I ended up downloading all their full lengths and EPs as a result. They've made their way up to one of my favorite bands of all time and I can't get enough of them. I'm also really enjoying Mike Watt's solo stuff. If I was a bassist, he would be my god.

If you've never heard them before (for shame if you haven't). They are a post-punk band with a lot of funk and outside influences. They were geniuses in their time and nothing comes close to their music now.

I recommend Double Nickels on the Dime and Paranoid Time as good starter albums.

Excellent, excellent band. Ever since Double Nickels graced my ears, I loved 'em. I also have Buzz or Howl Under The Influence of Heat and What Makes A Man Start Fires?

Both good albums, but nothing to Double Nickels.

Yeah they wrote the theme song to Jackass, so I guess I can't say I dislike them.

Seriously though, good band.

Amazing band. I've got Double Nickels on the Dime, 3-way Tie (For Last), and Post-Mersh Vol. 1. I fell in love with them after I heard Double Nickels.

They didn't write the theme FOR Jackass, Jackass used it without vocals for their theme but the song itself was on Double Nickels.

Yeah, that's what I knew them from.

Calexico did a pretty good cover off their EP Convict Pool.

Mike Watt has really been involved in public 'punk' lately, with Jackass and being in a Good Charlotte video and mangggggg.

But good, great, band. And Mike Watt is great in the Stooges.

But Minuteflag were a joke, heh. It's alright, but man, nothing worth keeping.

I really enjoyed Minuteflag, the songs were really really catchy. I don't like Dos though, two basses and nothing else is just too much for me.

I envy Sam for being able to see Watt.

Finally.

My work here is done.

I love you all.

D. Boon would be proud!

Mike Watt is amazing. Check out all his work with J Mascis and the Fog as well. Really solid stuff. Everyone loves Watt, and his solo albums tend to attract the most awesome people.

I have everything they've ever put out, but only some of it is MP3. If anyone needs anything, tell me. I will post it. I will share any Minutemen I have with anyone who would be willing to hear it.

I been a fan of them since I was 13. 13!!!! I'm 34 now, and I still listen to them, and thats sayin a lot.

I have The Punch line, and it's a 12" 45rpm and skips alot, but if I put a penny on it it slows down the record to much. I really with I had a better record player. But at least it plays Double nickels on the Dime.

Yeah, Buzz or Howl is my favorite after DNOTD. It's short and has two songs that are basically nothing, but the other songs are amazing that it makes up for it.

What Makes a Man Start Fires is brilliant as well. DNOTD is my favorite album, but I don't think i could pick a favorite song of theirs.

So yeah, they're my favorite band, George Hurley is one of my biggest influences on drums, and Mike Watt is a genius of course.

In terms of attitude and spirit, Minutemen are what punk is all about. I really wish i could've seen them live.

I've still not heard the MinuteFlag EP, but from what i hear it ain't all that great.

Everyone thats heard them aalready knows they ****ing rock already, so if you havent listened to them do so. They are now required listening for the punk forum.

Minuteflag is damn good, free-form jazz guitar duels from D. Boon and Greg Ginn, how can you resist that? Plus Henry's singing on catch the water is pretty amusing. The vinyl copy I have is my prized possesion.

Basicly.

I wonder what they would have done if D. didn't die. Maybe they would have become big like R.E.M., they were touring with them a few months before he died.

They probably would have done a bunch of side projects (like Minuteflag and Ciccone Youth). And sometime in the distant future when Cris Kirkwood gets out of jail and Husker Du gets back together there would be a Minutemen/Meatpuppets/Husker Du tour that I would follow around like a deadhead.

I would hope they got all the priase they deserved and kept making lots of good music. But I could see them getting too much praise, then just sort of fizzling, making only meidocre stuff for their more recent years.

Although Watt's solo stuff makes that idea a little less likely.
