So, It has come to my knowledge that there are quite a few prog fans out there, hiding in the deepest delves of Rock and Metal.
So, I have decided to create a Prog Rock/Metal thread, for discussing Prog artists. Many of the famous Prog Artists already have their own Thread for example, Dream Theater, Tool and Pink Floyd. So, this is for discussing other artists and helping others discover the wonders of Prog.
http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406837
The above link, is a FA, written by our very own Med. Many props to him.

I (and I'm sure others too) would much appreciate it if this thread was used for Bands who do not have thier own Thread, so try and Keep DT discussion to a minimum.
So, on with the discussion:
Anyone here into Genesis, Yes and King Crimson?
I have 'Foxtrot', and 'Selling England by the Pound', by Genesis,
and 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' by KG, all of which are aweomse albums.

Selling England By the Pound is such an awesome album; need to get some more early Genesis stuff.
I took some time away from Prog Rock/Metal and am starting to go back. Have been enjoying the Sun Caged stuff I have but need more. Will buy their CD soon I think.

Rush and Pink Floyd are both up there in my top 5 favorite bands.
I remember when I first got into prog- my bass teacher suggested to listen to some Rush and Yes (two bands he's obsesed with) for some good playing, so I went out and bought two greatest hits compilations. Looking at them now, they were very lacking, but at the time I fell in love instantly. I got heavily into Rush, and to a lesser extent, Yes. From there I explored ELP, King Crimson, Floyd, and more modern bands like The Mars Volta and Muse.
I want to get more into the genre as a whole. I'm going to pick up a Tull album soon. I've been shakey on Gabriel-era Genesis, though. i'm afraid it will sound like the cheesy pop that Phil Collins makes. For Genesis fans, were hteir early days poppy like Collins, or more like the prog bands I like now?
You know what the interesting thing is? A lot of the older Progressive rock fans I've met (mostly Peabody professors) really really loathe Dream Theater.
Progressive is such a wide and ambiguous genre. For example, I could say my favorite genre at the moment is progressive. Some people would immediately think of bands like Yes, King Crimson, and Rush.
For me, I like the modren progressive bands like Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation, Dredg, Radiohead, Oceansize, Riverside, etc.
The only "first-wave" prog band I really love is King Crimson. The bands I listed above, though, are some of my favorites.

Trust me, Genesis with Gabriel (or really, Steve Hackett) is not pop at all, but brilliant stuff.
They also made two excellent prog albums after Gabriel left, it was after Steve Hackett left that they went pop.
Progressive as a term is just such a loaded word. I can't think of anything that could sound anymore pretentious...
Besides "Jazz," "Classical," or "Art Music" of course ;)

Well that's because Dream Theater isn't really what prog is about. I still like them though.
Pain of Salvation though, that's a band that really captures everything that prog is about.

Listening to some of the Collins-era Gensis really makes me cringe, when you consider what an incredible band they used to be. The first few albums after Gabriel left are great, especially A Trick of the Tail, but yeah, once Hackett left they really went downhill musically (but uphill in album sales).

I have only heard the clips of Van Der Graff Generator songs that are on Prog Archives, it sounds like really good stuff though. What would you say is a good album to start with?
Also, I've been listening to DeLoused in the Comatorium (The Mars Volta) a lot recently, I forgot what an incredible album it is. Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt has to be one of the best album closers ever.

Zeppelin are really just bluesy hard rock, although some songs are quite psychadelic. If thats the kind of thing you are after I'd perhaps reccomend Physical Graffiti, I find much of the 2nd disc quite psychadelic.

I'd say Be, as that's where I started and it's also probably still my favourite album by them. A lot of people point to either Remedy Lane or Entropia though...they may be better ideas, since even by the standards of some prog, Be can be quite inaccesible.

I had a question if anyone actually know what art rock is, what makes a band art rock, and some bands in the genre.
From prog archives:
This was the original name of progressive rock music. We now use this within the umbrella of Prog or Progressive Rock as category that is used to refer to explorative works by bands that cross different genres or have an experimental nature that is not specific to one genre. Some of these bands may have had roots in other prog categories in their early years but later became more AOR or mainstream or vise versa starting out mainstream then becoming prog. These bands are considered primarily to be prog bands.
and it lists Rush, Uriah Heep, Kansas and The Mars Volta as art rock bands.
I really love prog rock/metal even though I“m much more into metal. Some of my favorite bands consist of Pain Of Salvation, Peccatum, Symphony X, Adagio, Radiohead, Tool, Pink Floyd, Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Arcturus, Ayreon, Therion, Green Carnation etc, etc.

I don't really think of art rock as a genre, although that may be because I think of bands that meet the description from prog archives as being avant-garde. All I use that for is what to call bands when I don't really have any idea what genre to put them into though, so that may not be the best definition. :-\
Yeah, they're pretty good. Kind of from the second tier of good prog bands, below the very best, but they're still a really good listen every now and again. Rain Dances is probably the best album I've heard by them.
What exactly is avant-garde?
GenuineImitation
01-31-2006, 03:45 PM
I've always thought of it as just being bands that you can't classify within normal genres. Stuff like Mr. Bungle, Arcturus (some of it), Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Lux Occulta...the thing is even those bands don't really sound all that much like each other, but what they do have in common is dramatic dynamic changes, a really diverse range of influences, and a huge unpredicitability about the music. I guess one way of describing it would be progressive music taken to an extreme level, although that doesn't really answer your question.
It does to an extent. I now have a slight idea about what it means.
NP: Rush - Passage to Bankok
ah, a prog thread. personally, i've been listening to a fair bit of Symphony X lately, i finally got round to buying Rush - 2112 the other day, and i have a few Pink Floyd albums.
on the subject of Symphony X, could they possibly be classified as Progressive Power Metal, seeing as their lyrics deal with so much mythology?

They are a combination of both. There music is more on the prog side of the spectrum, but the lyrics are mainly power metal based. I just call them Power Prog.

I'm really surprised to see such a new band as Riverside at number 2 on that list. Not to mention a Devin Townsend album that just came out today. Not that I don't agree it should be on the list as those are two of my favorite progressive bands, but it just seems a little weird.

They've kind of put stuff in the wrong order...I'm not sure how you can have Kayo Dot below that many Dream Theater albums, and likewise, putting Ghost Reveries down as the best Opeth album, and 6th on the whole list, seems quite surprising given how many great albums Opeth have made over their career. Don't get me wrong, Ghost Reveries is good, but I wouldn't put it in their top 3. Although Focus by Cynic and some Spiral Architect should easily be higher. The list's pretty dominated by a few bands, but it isnt that bad.
I pretty much agree. Blackwater Park and A Sceptics Universe should have been higher. Metropolis: Scenes From a Memory and Images & Words were where they should be though.

Well, it depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I love his solo project, because it's heavy, yet ambient and very unique-sounding music. I would recommend Ocean Machine or Terria to get you started on that, as those are probably his best albums. Specifically for songs, try getting Seventh Wave, Funeral, Bastard, Canada and Earth Day.
As for Strapping Young Lad (his metal project), I can't give any insight, because I don't like them. But his solo stuff is indeed amazing.

I think it's the laundry list of done to death cliches that make a lot of people consider them to be regressive.
like what? what's this "laundry list" you're talking about?
like what? what's this "laundry list" you're talking about?
1) The overly sentimental and flowery acoustic songs
2) The deliberate lyrical oversophistication that only results in shallowness
3) Solos and unison lines that are so horribly predictable and dry that it makes composition majors weep
4) Sacrificing any sense of instrumental complexity for speed
One of my professors said it best: "It's like their label just assembled some really fast session players together and told them to make music to impress those who are easily impressed."

For that Top 100 prog albums link before, I don't think a lot of people realise that it was linked to the Top 100 prog METAL albums, and there's not much of that around, thus the mass Dream Theater. And it's by user score, so newer albums obviously rate higher because everyone is all "zomg noo album".
Prog good... Yes, Tool, Radiohead, Opeth... those are the only ones I can really think of that I've heard, I've never bothered to check out a lot of prog.

I gave Eels a listen. It's nowhere near Maiden in sound. Anyway my favorite old school PR is Pink Floyd's Animals. Also anything Yes related. From PM I pretty much consider Scenes From A Memory the crown. I like Porcupine Tree's post Voyage 34 records but can't really feel anything for their psychedelic ones.
Muse 's Absolution and Origin Of Symmetry are a must IMO for PR fans. While it's technically not PR it bares many resemblences. Also check out a band called Marillion - awesome.

O.S.I rocks. I'd call it a heavier Chroma Key though but that's mainly because Moore's attempting to create a similar atmosphere but with less samples.
Kevin Moore is awesome. Frankly, he's the only member of DT that I like.

For Queensryche, without a doubt get Operation Mindcrime as its widely regarded as their best.
Quennsryche is actually coming out with Operation Mindcrime part II. So far it seems that that album is going to be a regressive effort in which they shoot to replicate sound of the original (which was released in the late 80's if I remember right). There's a sample song from the upcoming album on the web somewhere.
As for Camel, I would strongly suggest an album that was done with their original lineup of Latimer, Bardens, Ferguson, and Ward. Out of these such albums I would personally recommend Moonmadness or Snow Goose.
To me the best aspect of Camel is the thematic element present in music--many of their songs are crafted in an attempt to evoke a certain setting, emotion, or mood. This emphasis is much more apparent in their earlier works imo, and is done particularly well in both The Snow Goose and Moonmadness. Also make sure you listen to Lady Fantasy (which is on the album Mirage) as its a Camel classic.
Is OSI the band name or an acronym for something? I've never heard of them, but they sound interesting.

Yeah that's where I find that prog really differs from your normal rock or metal, all the instruments are much more independent...they don't all follow the same melody line the entire song. It's a lot more like jazz in that way, which is probably why prog requires a little more knowledge of theory than mainstream music.

can anyone upload a King's X album? This girl recommended told me about them (who usually like crappy music) after she heard them on the Garden State soundtrack or something but I can't find anything online.... I'm really curious to hear it, but I heard it's nothing like Opeth or whatever.

Glad someone mentioned Andromeda :)
They're a prime example of why alot of people don't like technical prog.
They're insanely technical and they have a cool sound but I think they really should try and have some better compositional value.
I understand but I really dig this style of prog along prog/technical death and heavy prog (like nevermore for example). What I cannot stand is Dream Theater/Pain of Salvation/Opeth-like prog, it bores me to death :p

They always make me smile because the bass has nothing to do with the song
*coughInsectcough*
My dad actually likes them alot
The bass playing at first seemed to be pretty random, but now it seems like every note was perfectly placed; which I really like. Now if only I had a fretless bass :p

I like Spiral Architect a bit...I remember reading somewhere that in some of their songs, each musician has a different time signature so they cross over every so often, giving it a chaotic/technical sound.
I can't stand Spiral Architect. To me they're the epitome of wankery.

Spiral Architect would be a lot better if they didnt have a singer.

I completely agree. Their musicianship is awsome but the high and whiny vocals take away from the music

2112 is easily their finest album, but Moving Pictures is their most accesible. Drop me your AIM and I can send you both.
I'm a huge fan of A Farewell to Kings, I would have to say that is my favourite Rush album. But those two are also great.

I just can't stand the vocals. Usually, even if the vocals are nothing special, or even just plain bad, I can ignore it if the rest is good enough. But I really can't stand Watchtower's.
Spiral Architect's aren't as bad as theirs, but they're not much better.
Yeah, many people have serious problem with the vocals but they've never been a turn off to me. Watchtower are awesome, ages ahead of their time since you will find hints of their riffage in every single modern tech metal band. Chuck Schuldiner himself has stated how influencial Watchtower are. I prefer their second album only because, unlike the first one, the production is tolerable.

In fact, pretty much all the bands that get recommended to me, and people say "oh, but the vocals aren't to good" I actually enjoy the vocals.

Whatever, the ultra heavy parts with the really deep vocals. What do you call that if its not Black Metal?
The deep, growling vocals are more akin to death metal than black metal, and the heavy distorted guitars don't have much in common with black metal riffs either.
They're just progressive metal parts, really.

Those sections are most similar to death metal.
You can't really identify that style (the heavy parts) as just being progressive metal, as they are nothing like the kind of metal a band such as Symphony X or Dream Theater would play.

Gong is a nice, trippy band. Check out Soft Machine if you like them.
For Opeth that has something in common with black metal (but is actually musically and listenable instead of awful cacophony) check out Orchid and Morningrise.

This is just me, but I would not akin any aspect of Opeth, outside of their really early material, to death metal aside from the way the vocals are growled. Some songs have sections where I can see connections, but other than that it's just Opeth.

I would say you should guys think of the fact that there are many black metal sub genres and you've hardly given a chance to any of them. I'm not sure what band defines your perception of black metal but I would strongly recommend you to listen to Dissection's Where Dead Angels Lie. If you feel like trying it give me your addresses and I will send it to you. If you still think this is awful cacophony then I give up :).

If you haven't heard Dissection, listen to them. I think even you would have a hard time describing them as intolerable noise. They've as much in common with melodic death as black metal; don't dismiss them just because you've not had much luck with a genre they're associated with so far.
