Sorry guys, I wasn't really into any of these bands so I didn't recognize the songs well enough to make a set list
I just got back from this awesome show. I thought I could do a non-biased review of the concert because I wasn't heavily into any of these bands. The only band that I liked enough to the know words to the songs was Trivium, and the rest I didn't recognize a single song. So yeah, here goes nothing...
Zao
They came, they chugged, they played breakdowns, they screamed, and the invisible ninjas got away once again.
Zao was really out of place. Surprisingly there were little to no hardcore kids so no one was really into the music and you can tell everyone was kind of bored. To my surprise I saw pretty much no hardcore dancing, and very few people were moving to the music. However, they did play well, and from what I can tell they were giving it there all.
Devil Driver
As far as crowd participation goes, this band was a huge improvement. They had many more fans in the crowd, and the music was a little easier to get into. It was much less generic than Zao and more interesting. This show was my first Devil Driver listen, and I was impressed. There frontman motivated the crowd to move more and this girl turned to the guy in front of me and pushed someone, and not a second later the area I was in turned into a mosh pit. The frontman also gave this bit about how he didn't want to see any "emo dancing bull****"(paraphrased). It was pretty funny at the time. They played really well. There vocalist was notably amazing. He was bellowing out amazing screams and growls and showing no strain at all. I'll be picking up an album by these guys for sure.
Trivium
These guys put on an outstanding performance. All criticisms I've heard of Matt Heafy's clean voice were shattered by his vocals tonight. You can tell he developed his voice a lot more, and he can pull off his clean vocals almost on par with the studio versions of the songs. Everything else about there performance was great too. Matt motivated people to mosh more like he always does, but he didn't do it in a criticizing kind of way like he did when I saw them last. He only had to ask for pits once and after they started he went "**** yeah! that's more like it!" and I didn't hear of it again. They did a Pantera tribute/cover thing. It started with the intro to Domination, and then after it they rested for a few beats and started to play Walk. They pulled it off well, and the crowd loved it. They played a great setlist, and I'd say they were my favorite performance of the night, mainly because I knew the songs.
In Flames
I'm not a huge In Flames fan. I've given Whoracle a listen and that's about it. There performance tonight though converted me. I really enjoyed it. The only song I recognized was Episode 666 so everything was new to me. Anders went on about how he was told that LA sucked, but he wouldn't stop congratulating the crowd for proving them. He said we were the best crowd by far (though, I'm sure he says that all the time). Still though, you could tell they had a huge following there. Most of the people new most of the words, and there was a lot of action from the audience. Before they started to play a song Anders asked if anyone had Clayman, and some guy's voice stood out that said "yeah". So, Anders got him onstage to sing a song. He didn't know the words, and just did some headbanging. He jumped off stage and got someone else to do the job. This kid could scream fairly well and he knew the words, so it was pretty cool. Anders came back out and cracked some jokes and then they went on. They played plenty of songs off of Come Clarity, and if you ask me those were the best songs they played. So, to summarize, there setlist was long and well varied, they played well, and had the crowd really into it. I definetly need more In Flames albums. Tonight they had me floored.
I strongly recommend this show. It's awesome.
