Hey, I would like to know why you prefer to play the bass, more than any other instrument such as the guitar, drums, and so on and so forth.

Thanks.

I found out yesterday why i truly loved the bass! funk jams during sound-checks-gone-wrong are what i was built to do!

Not many people play it, and it's an essential part of the band. People generally don't have a band without bass, so its a great opportunity.

In the history of music, no-one has ever said "My god! Listen to that treble! It's so shrill!".

I started playing because I was into Primus, and I thought I'd be more likely to get into bands.

I've continued because of the huge variety of playing styles and tones, it is a hugely versatile instrument. Plus I fell in love with the fretless. It's so comfortable to play, and expressive...

Though that said, bass isn't my only instrument. Just my main one.

i prefer bass because it only has 4 strings, and you only have to play the root note, so its easier. i wanted to play guitar, but i sucked at it, so i just bought a bass instead.

 that was awesome

i prefer bass because of its deep tone. it makes songs and bands sound so much fuller than if it didn't have bass, even if its just root notes that's just being played. i play both bass and guitar and i believe that you can be more creative on the bass, you have more room to work with it.

that's why i like the bass

i prefer the bass because i feel that the bass allows you to be a more unique musician than guitar does and the other reason is because its really easy to jam out something on the guitar that sounds cool but on bass it takes just that much more effort but in the end its worth it

First off theres the physicla aspect, the big space between strings the 4 big strings the long neck etc. Then theres the musical aspect which is what really gets me. I like the way it relates to the music, like, i like writing basslines. I feel i can be more creative on a bass than anywhere else thats why i chose it

Hmmm let's see...

1.- Jaco Pastorius was miles better than any guitarist I had ever seen.

2.- Les Claypool showed me how versatile this instrument is.

3.- What is the average percent of bassist out there compared with guitarists and drummers? Being a sucky bassist is better than being a sucky guitarist.

4.- Kinda feels good to show-off :) I knew a lot of guitarist who could show-off masturbating the guitar necks, but not many could show-off playing bass. It seems kinda egocentric, but a great bassist stands out more than a good guitarist.

There was a time when I played drums alot more than bass, but thats changed....alot.

I spend my whole day playing bass basically,it's always on my lap while im on the comp.
And I feel the bass, like I know what im doing and I can make music that im thinking..... >.>
Bass is just a really fun instrunment basically.

At my first ever gig (Cathedral), I must have been... well, not even into my teens! The MOMENT they came on and started playing you could FEEL the bass- not just hear it, but FEEL. It was the best feeling ever, and they look a lot cooler than guitars in my opinion.

...I never knew what it would feel like to stand in front of a bass amp on stage and REALLY feel the groove!

Everyone is looking for a bass player. Its a common saying, and good bass players are never out of work.

I just love the tone, feel, techniques and looks of bass.

So many more things to do than on a guitar.

Plus, if i played guitar, id be breaking strings everyday. Im terrible.

it's really an insturment thats not as easy to comprehend as a guitar or drums or keyboards...

I used to play bass and guitar, and the only reason i played bass was because i had a band....i would never touch my bass, because i didn't know what to play on it....but I'm so glad i stuck with it and got into new music and just unveiled all the things you can do with it

and to repeat someone who said "a great bassist stands out more than a great guitarist"

I see alot of you guys contrast the bass with a guitar. I might be picking bass up soon, and as a formal lead guitarist for my band, it seems easy.

Oh well, hopefully I'll grow into it.

btw, here is something I recorded, on myspace, through a gaming mic and audacity.

The second guitar on your stereo right is suppose to be the bass, since I recorded this all by my own, my other lead guitarist's lead is not available.
I do want an overall critique, and I know, I can't sing. :(

basically we're looking for a drummer and a singer.

It comes easier to me. I have to think when I play guitar or drums, I hav to think, but with bass I get an odd sense of independence between my hands/arms and the rest of. So I can usually go dance/mosh with the crowd when I'm playing.

we understand rythyms like drummers, but melodies like guitarists, where as usually most drummers ignore the melody and a lot of guitarists ignore the rythym - after all if you can solo like alexi laiho over it what does it matter that its out of time?  :thumb:

Well...:

- Guitars often go into solos, and I think it's way too overated. Some short ones are great, but when it streaches out, then I get thrown off.
- Drums are absolutely necessary, moreso than guitar and bass, but it has no melody.
- Bass has great tone, deeper notes, and the lower frequencies that I've always had a taste for.

Bass (or lack of,) is the actually the reason I dont listen to as much Classic Rock as other Metalheads. Not enough Bass. Well... that, and too much Guitar soloing. That's why I like Mudvayne (Well, not the only reason...) No Guitar solos (not that it's bad to have a few,) and lots of Bass. And Complex Drums.

Well, originally I was going to include about how its the only real low-end instrument that takes its tone from your playing. A synthesizer makes the notes when you press the key, but it doesn't get any extra tone from your fingers. Just like acoustic drums pwn electric drums any day.

its so sexy and deep, being a girl its like playing a guy lol....deep low tone and strong sexy neck, it makes me all googly inside....i unno i think its like the spine of a band holding it together, and bigger is sooo much better

hellonearth07

i love the tone of the bass, and also its vursitilaty....(sp??)...

you can go from an in-your-face funky slap line, to laying down the groove in the background. also you can be as aggressive as anything and go straight into playing melodic flowing rythms.

another reason... its limitless in possibilites. There's acoustic basses, piccollo, 8 and 12 string(octaved strings) and 5 or 6 string and on up. oh yeah, almost forgot fretless. but the tonal capabilities of the dif. basses out there gives you a sonic universe thats open for you to explore.....

now take that and compare it to what u could do with a normal 6 or 12 string guitar

I like the low tone that a bass has but also knowing that with a bass you have the ability to get a lot of treble also. overall i just like the tone better than guitar. a bass is much more versitile. also, everytime i mess w/ one of my friends guitars the strings just feel so small, like their gonna break if i get too aggressive or something. and mostly everyone plays guitar so i wanted to stand out!

I love the creative freedom of the bass.Only rarely is it ever the main melody instrument. Often live regardless of what you're covering you're able to play what you feel or imrov underneath everything (thats my strength as a player improv) build on subtle inflections, etc.
Its also the only instrument that can be played perfectly in almost any situation (I also play String bass/Double Bass) hence the versatility.

The bass is awesome for me because I like the deep growly tones. Bass fills the room and thumps and makes the girlies dance, and they have no idea why. I like the low end cuz you can almost count the beats as the notes leave the speakers. Thats why i heart the bass.

Well I had been playing guitar for about a year. My guitar teacher was a bassist and he whipped out his bass one day and started funking around. I thought it was cool and it was the first time I had really heard a good bass player.

I bought a bass because its easier to get into bands at first.

Then I really liked the feel of how it plays and basically dropped guitar and went full bass.

A good bass player is always more impressive then a good guitar player. A bass just sounds smooth and ahh...

I dont know really... I just love everything about it. Its just more fun then guitar.
