View Full Version : Live Bassists that Shock?

So I went to a show last night and was very surprised at the choice of basses.

No one listened to the opening band. :p

Then this band played called "Verbana Darvel."

http://www.myspace.com/verbanadarvell

Their bassist played a Deluxe Ash Fender Jazz with a Leo-Quan BAII bridge. I was a bit stunned, seeing as most bassists in that genre play either a standard Fender J or P.

Next up was this awful "metalcore" band called Vanna. Their bassist, however, played a Warwick Corvette 5er fingerstyle. That bad boy cut through the mix amazingly well and I was once again shocked to see a bassist in the genre play something, not to mention well (before Vanna started playing he was playing some cool riffs and grooves).

http://www.myspace.com/vanna (ewwwww)

Finally, The Number Twelve Looks Like You came on. I'm a big fan of their bassist (especially in songs like "An Aptly Fictional Description" and "Civeta Dei") but was really shocked when I saw him play what appeared to be a Squier P, complete with cheap paint job and metallic-looking pickguard. It was the same paint/pickguard as a MM SUB Stingray but it looked really crappy. Granted he was awesome (as usual since he's a good bassist).

http://www.myspace.com/tntllu

But yeah...anyway...that's my story. Post stories about going to see a live band and the bassist's choice of bass shocked you. :D

most of the shows i have been to recently, most were emo or pop punk or punk, the basic fender P and the ocasional jazz. most are just local bands. the only big name band i have seen recently was Panic at the disco, and they were ok.

^ I don't like FFTL but I saw He is Legend and FFTL played with them. I met Sonny and Matt. Matt and Sonny were cool guys, though, despite me not being into their music.

Sonny was like 5 feet tall. You could take him.

I hate his voice. :amaze:

To think I used to "tolerate" them...ewwwwwww. :p

seeing Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) play a double buck bongo at the last show...hed play a stingray earlier on, even that shocked me. Too bad i never got to see him play his Wals in a show :(

But it still sounded majestic, them Ernie Balls.

I was at a local punk show and this not bad band's bassist/vocalist played a Rickenbacker. They're called Angels, Saints, and Heroes.

I was at a local show, (heartless CD release show if any of you are in AZ) and the bassist for the band Two Dimes (like 80's punk) was using some crazy red bass, it was awsome though. but the guy was absolutly crasy, he had enough energy for everyone in the band.

Oh, i've got loads, but im getting ready for a concert tonight actually  so, i'll probably post more later... but, first off is..

Faded Me - Christian rock band, with a FREAKING AWESOME bassist... running a MM Stingray 5 through a sansamp tech21 Bass driver (forget name of it) w/ other pedals through an Eden 8x10.. not only was his tone awesome, but he slap improv's between songs w/ the drummer was freaking sweet... and he's one of the few bands PERIOD that you really see have bass solo's.. let alot from the local scene...
http://www.fadedme.com/ <~ Go to the music section to listen to tunes
http://www.fadedme.com/audio/when-its-over-ep/04-Begining-To-Breathe.mp3 <~ Soundclip of one of the songs.. i love the bass solo intro and verse variation...

Bobaflex also had a pretty sweet bassist... the band as a whole might not be to your liking... but, with his MM Stingray 4 through a Mesa 4x10/1x15? something like that cab and some kind of amp (couldnt see)... his tone BOOMED... it was pretty sweet...
http://www.bobaflexwarriors.com/ <~ Go to music to hear them... Better Than Me is a good one... and Six Feet Underground w/ a bass/drum's verse..

More later :thumb:

My favorite local band, Killer Thomas, has a bassist with a BTB 6er and a gloriously blue Ricky with the most beautifully painted neck ever... Like, it lookes like a chrome pipe that's been powder coated in blue sex....

The bass player in Big Business uses a squier live. The quality of it matches his playing, singing, and general appearance. He also used the biggest rig I've ever seen full of ****ty cabs which he duct-taped together.

i was at a local show recently, nothing really shocked me, but ill put it down anyway. The first band i remember vividly was called Treachery and their vocalist/bassist had a nice white warwick corvette 5er. the bass cuts through that mix well.
www.myspace.com/treacheryband (http://www.myspace.com/treacheryband)
The next band that played was a prog metal band called Obsydia. This bassist, IMO, is amazing. he plays bass in my jazz band at school. His bass is a Yamaha JM sig, 6er. he got it signed by john, which is really cool.
http://www.myspace.com/obsydia
The headlining band was called Stone Of End. This band, although relatively young, kicks some serious tail. The bassist, who plays a B.C. Rich Warlock 4 string is pretty much wild. Check 'em out.

I won't talk about bassists, but about a guitarist. This dude is 40 years old and he still rocks your socks off, but anyway I know him. I showed up at our practise building and he was there too and he always shows me guitars/basses that he accuired, from a 'Ric 4000 to a Squier guitar. He grabbed the last thing and said: before you start saying things, listen to this thing. He plugged it in and boosted out some great tunes and I was like WOAH! That sounds good! It was a kinda Telecaster, but with a humbucker in the bridge, no tone control but a volume and a threeway switch for the bridgepickup.

Just look into an instrument and see if it's nice. I'm using a Richwood Jbass (150 dollar) and stuffed Dimarzio Model J's in it. Now it sounds sooo good, plays sooo good and is soooo good that I don't want to get rid of it.

About bassplayers I've seen live. This dude came up with a headless bass and was in a kinda rapband. He had chops I've never seen, I think he could easily be compared to coffee or somebody like that. He also won an international price for being one of the better youth bassplayers :thumb:

stingray = official grindcore bass...in every single grindcore band i've seen the bassist plays a stingray (although i guess it doesnt really matter since they tune to drop X and play so hard with a pick you can't even hear anything)
/hates grindcore

I was surprised to see this death metal band, Abed, with their bassist playing a tobias 4 (don't know which model, it has 1 humbucker and a light natural finish)....sounds ace though

i love how the last sentance about switching basses runs into itself...!

Anyway...yeah, flea with his Wals. that was a shock...Umm, one band (Mono-Nowhere, Noise-rock) in my local scene uses an EBMM Stingray, which is so nice...Battered, but nice. The guy who plays it (Nick) is awesome, too. Great slap and tap lines. I guess i'm kinda Unique as well in the scene, Seeing as i use a 6er...One guy i know came up to me after ways and said he didn't think 6 string basses existed! all in good faith...

lolz.

A band I seen a while back (forget the name) their bassist had an MIA Jazz with a tort 'guard. His tone was great too.

I was surprised when a band named Beyond the Embrace's bassist was playing a 6er of some sort (i didn't know different brands too well at that point) and looked exactly like my uncle.

People were probably surprised to see me playing a 6 string ibanez in a metalcore band. Or when I played a 5 string cort curbow in the same band.

a few weeks back i saw some band, i forget the name... werent real great, but the bassist had a 6 string, and the whole night im goin 'that looks pretty decent... but, wtf is the headstock?'... i couldn't see cause of the lights.... when it went on after the show, it was a Carlo Robelli ... probably why i couldn't actually hear him

OTHER BANDS
Leaning Towards Tomorrow - They've broken up since, but their bassist was pretty sweet, playing on a true Vintage Fender P bass - 1962!.. It had like a giant Acid stain on the back, i was priviledged to play, and holy crap!! Vintages fenders are freaking amazing....

Graces Gone (formerlly The City Is Ours) i saw them tonight, they were decent... their bassist is so freaking tiny! it's hilarious, he's.. 5'1 i think? and their singer is 6'2 .. but he was real good, did a funky break down inbetween songs, which was odd, cause they're a 'screamo/metalmostgrindcrapface-core' band...

This Fires Embrace http://www.myspace.com/thisfiresembrace was pretty sweet over all.. im friends with the bassist - Stevo... Their drummer is SICK...did a 9 minute drum solo, then into a small bass solo... then a Guitar off! it was nut's... crazy tapping solo's, dualing it out.....

How do you tell who is good and who is bad when...THAT is what you listen to?

Makes no sense to me. Sorta seems like ALL people who can't play and just make pointless, irritating, loud noise should be grouped into one catagory of badness, but hey, what do I know?

I've obviously missed some important part of my childhood where they taught us all how to like humiliatingly bad music.

I don't mean to be...mean, but god damn people, seriously.

Oh, I also forgot to mention this other bassist.

He had a vintage P bass with maple neck and a walnut finish. (like JP's) It was also modded. The jack was moved to the underside of the bass, it had more knobs than a usual P, and a BAII bridge.

That + his Mesa 400+ head = love.

It was interesting to see As The Sky Went Red plsy our local skatepark, mostly because of the bassists rig.

All the other bands had been using the places Ampeg 8x10 and SVT350H head. ATSWR's bassist moves that thing off stage and hauls out a 2x18 and 8x10, laying them sidways and stacking them atop each other.

He used 2 big QSC poweramps, one for each cab, and ran an Orange amp head as his pre. He was playing a sweet Steinberger 5 string headless, holt-on with graphite neck. His tone was monstrous and his chops absolutely destroyed. The man is simply amazing. Afterwords, I got to jam on his stuff, and my god. It was intense. He said he strings EADGC, and drops from there, I didn't know what to.

I drooled during their whole set.

I saw 'A' once, for what is basically a pop-rock type of band he had a Warick of some sort (the one with the curved body shape). He was slaping and poping his heart away, pulling off some really nice stuff, but during the soundcheck, then inbetween songs, then the songs were simple root note stuff, on a par with hoppus mostly. Very strange.

I said Verbana Darvell was decent and that Vanna sucks.

How can you say that about Number 12? They'e amazing musicians who write and use theory. Yeah, maybe it's not for you, but to say they make up crap on the spot is a huge compliment (although false). Their guitarists are awesome and their bassist is really really good. A lot of the music I listen to has awesome musicians but they don't have solos and complex riffs like Number 12.

The genre where people make it up and don't practice is called grindcore, by the way, and that's not what any of that music is. :thumb:

Gav, I'm jealous that you were able to see the Number Twelve Looks Like You because they hate Oregon and never come just like every band ever.

I love the Number Twelve Looks Like You. They're one of my favourite bands. They're new album weirded me out at first because of the production quality since it sounded nothing like Put On Your Rosy Red Glasses, but, overall, I definitely loved the album.

Now, I just need to see them live. :(
