Ok. A large group of African American people at my school are having a traditional 30minute or so, long dance/festival type show for black history month. They asked me and another member of our percussion section to play African Beats for them to dance too. Basically were gunna jam for 30 minutes straight. So my question is.
1.What all should i include in my setup?
I was thinking of this:
Bassdrum, tomtoms, Jamblock, Cowbell, cymbal, and Bongos.
2.Is there any place/songs that have traditional african rhythms I can listin too and get a feel for it?
3. Whyd they pick me? a very white boy?
PS. Were not playing drumsets, were just useing a latin/african percussion setup.

you don't have to be of a specific culture/ethnicity to appreciate the history and culture of another. maybe they chose you because you're good? (right!?)
but sorry, I've got nothing else to offer. good luck!

just drop off a beat box and hit play
Congas sound great with most things, it all depends what you can get your hands on

Good book:
West African Rhymthms for drum set.
It's not easy stuff, but it would be perfect reference for what you're doing.
