Ok...i've been saving up for a kit for a long while.

The whole time i've been saving up for a Pro M but all the talk about Gretsch here made me think of getting one. I've always thought they looked really classy and looked like really great drums with a very vintage look to them.

I've tried out both kits and i liked them both, and I'm calling for a price of a Cataline/Renown Maple later on today. I guess the question is, which one is the better kit? What are the Pro's and Con's of each? This is all in your opinion of course.

I was looking at the catalina a while back as well. Personally I wouldnt get it. The toms kept constantly falling out of tune. It may have something to do with the mounting system (Which I believe they have two of, one suspension, one yamaha style) I played on the suspended.

The renown maple on the other hand are AMAZING kits. But the price will be much higher. I played on one for the first gig I ever played with my band and was very pleased. Toms stayed in tune the whole night. They have more high end attack (Not transient) it seems than the other maple kits in the price range.

I cant comment on the Mapex M as I have not played it. I have played a 3005 which is very similar (I think?)

would the Renown Maple cost more then the Pro M or about equal? and what about quality-wise?

would the Renown Maple cost more then the Pro M or about equal?Renown maple will cost more. I dont know canadian prices, But for reference the Mapex M are in the 1000-1200 range, and the Renown maple are probably up around 1500-1700. If you are thinking of getting the renown, you might want to also try out the Saturns from Mapex. Try to find a place near you that has some to try out.

If you were going to go Gretsch man, I'd definitely save up for a Renown. Although they're pretty close, I think the Pro M is a step up from the Catalina, but they're still nice drums. Just keep that Tobacco Fade in your head and you'll make the right choice ;)

i know it ain't the catalina birch, but I love the catalina club, my college has that as one of its 4 drumsets, really nice, the toms are tuned way high, the floor tom is about equal in pitch to my snare at home :D

tar looks the same as stm. Its that little ball in the middle that makes the difference.

The yess mounts are way better than the optimounts.

i love yess, and yamaha tom arms. but i just prefer optimounts for the actual mount. if only a way to combine the 2..

mapex mounting is great...and as i said above...the Renown maple will be EXTREMELY expensive since a catalina birch is 1000 for a shell pack...which is absolutely rediculous...so gretsch is a no-go...Pro M ftw!
