Ok. So i've had stock heads for waaaaay to long. My band is going to do some recordings and I'm thinking... Lets get rid of those stock heads first. The band plays sorta heavy stuff, punk rock ish I guess. But when I practice on my own I play just about everything. So any ideas would be great.

Coated Emporers or G2's. I'd say.

coated ambs/G1 over clear amb./G1. most versitile tuning range there

I've used Aquarian Studio X coated heads in the past and they always sounded good. However, I just put Evans G2s on my kit last night and I like them even better so far.

I like Pinstripes on the toms but no one else does

Coated Ambs over Clear Ambs will be the most common response

what about snare heads? im going out tomorrow to pick up new ones and im leaning towards evans reverse powercenter over hazy 300.

Is that a good combo or should i go for something else?

If you like deep sounding drums that still have attack to them, you'd want Clear emperors over clear ambassadors.......my friend got this set up a few days ago and his drums sound ssssssssooooooo good. If i ever get a chance i'm gonna pick those up.

as fo snare head....definately and evans genera.....sounds sick

I like pinstripes. They sound damn good if you know how to tune drums.

I like pinstripes. They sound damn good if you know how to tune drums. No you are wrong. They are made for people who can't tune drums. People new to drumming use them to get a some what clear sound from there toms since they have a hard time tuning an Emp or Amb etc.

Thanks:upset:

Im a great tuner for toms but not for bass or snares and I really like the way my toms sound at the mintue. Ive been playing for over 4 years so am no where near new to drumming, I got them in 2004 but I wasnt new to drumming then, I was told they are for rock music and heavy hitters, such as me.

I have used Coated Emporers for while now, and I am very happy with the way they're holding up.

I'll reccomend the same heads I always do, go Clear Emperors over Clear Ambassadors. Clear heads pwns coated heads!

But, if you have the chance test all options you can before you buy, then pick what you like the most, regardless of recommendations really... Not very easy to test heads without buying them though...

They are good for live situations where the mic does the work and the drum doesnt need to, ie: Portnoy, Eppard

I understand what you are saying but they do have good uses and for that matter arent bad heads to use when you start out.

I think

For snare: genera dry (despite people flaming them) over clear amb snare.

why in the world would i flame a vented and muffled snare head with no tone? thats just crazy

oh, and there is only 1 kind of snareside amb.

If your recording with a desk then get and will fool round with EQ then i suggest the following:

Toms: Clear Ambs over Clear Dips, no muffling.
Snare: Coated Amb over snare-side clear amb, no muffling.
Bass: Clear PS3 for batter and clear amb for reso, muffling [depending on room].

difference is, you can make an Ambassador sound like a Pinstripe, you can't make a Pinstripe sound like a Ambassador if you get my drift.

Pins are far easier to tune to that dullish, fat sound most 'rock' players like. But I find they sound unnatural at higher tunings. The fact that they are more expenive than Ambs which are far cheap just goes to show that people will pay to be lazy.

I would go clear amb over clear amb, if you want attack that is, for toms. For a warmer sound on toms go for some coated amb over clear ambs. Then for snare Coated amb over snareside amb. Then bass clear PS3 over ebony Amb.

Toms - Coated amb + Clear amb.
Snare- Coated amb + Snare side amb
Bass - Coated emperor

Thats what i should be getting. I think its good.
