Do lots of you guys dampen your snare? (does it depend on situation?....etc)
Just some opinions..thoughts..?
I own two snares, of which I dampen one; the expensive one works as a more rough snare (tomcat acrylic snare 12 x 6,5..no dampening..wonderful ring), where the other one has more of a "pop sound" to it, with lots of dampening crap on it..

No, not really. Let em sing out, that's really what defines the 'snare' sound.

When i'm practicing rudiments on a snare I might chuck on small o-ring on there, just to get my hands working abit, but i never muffle snares in a playing situation, especially not live.

Never muffle them, they would sound too tight for me.

why do i see a lot of professional drummers with a piece or 2 of black tape on their snares in live situations.

I muffle the batter of my copper shell sometimes.

People here confuse "Most always" with "always"

Depending on personal preference and a whole bunch of other crap, sometimes dapening can make a person happy. More often than not though, a snare can sound better undampened.

live and unmic'ed you cant afford to kill the resonance and projection that "ring" gives you. when your going through a desk though, there are things you can do to optimise the sound of both muffled and unmuffled drums.
