...but its a serious inquiry.
Why does it seem like everyone hates Travis Barkers playing because he's Travis Barker?
It's like theres some kind of "Travis Sucks because he's made a living playing drums and i haven't" Bandwagon going on in these forums.
And as far as i'm concerned, he plays drums better than most "punk" bands i've heard.
and don't give me that "punk drumming is bland" response either
I want solid concrete reasons why you think he sucks.
I was just listening to the last blink album (which is the only one I can tolerate) and well he has some pretty creative grooves, that he plays SOLID.
So could someone please explain to why its so concrete that he sucks?
people hate him here because hes extremely overrated. and yes its not his fault hes overrated..its his fans. all the people that come here trying to be like him and then they argue back when people are jsut trying to point them in a different direction and help them out by expanding their knowledge.

he is over rated, but thats no reason to hate him. The guy CAN play the drums and in my opinion he plays them well - Not great, but well.

that is your opinion and you have every right to have that. Same with the people that dont like him. I mean dont get me wrong he does fit the music...i dont really like the band much its just not my type of music but i mean he does fit the music. But other than that hes just not a drummer i would follow to expand my learning at all. A lot of people jsut tend to follow drummers from big bands wich dont really help them with their learning at all. they are just playing the same beats and everything that the person they are following is playing. Yes its good to get ideas from other drummers but when you base your playing style on just 1 person and its just a "punk" drummer.....youre not going to advance much. You might advance with speed but thats it and speed isnt all that important.

The last blink album, since it's the example, was almost entirelly sampled drumming.
The video accounts of this were aired on MTV's show wich follwoed blink on the making of the album.
Secondly. He's demonstrated a rather horrible attitude for being who he is. His interviews, and very much lack there of in major drumming mags. Have been nothing but pompus crap.
Thirdly. He's a backstabber. He ditched his old band mid tour to play with blink. Leaving them high and dry. He also has lied repeatedly in interviews.
Fourthly, the company he endorses and now owns a chunk of, OCDP, is about the biggest rip off in drums there is.
Generally speaking, in most cases where he has the opportunity to be in public light. He makes an *** of himself.
Considering the stark difference between that, and most other famous drummers positive attitudes, etc.. has gained him a rather nasty reputation.

The last blink album he multitracked each drum part. So he did the hihats, then recorded snare etc, all seperatly. I'm not sure how many songs it was on but i'm sure I read it somewhere, maybe in the album sleeve. Unless thats what you meant by 'sampled' josiah.
Anyway, I think hes a complete arse. He looks like a tool, has horrible technique and sets his kit up pretty nasty. A lot of kids look up to him and most of them get the impression that looking cool (having your kit setup like his, using OCDP kits, Zil A custom cymbals, stupidly high hihats etc) is more important that actually learning to play properly.
Apart from that, I like his playing sometimes.
I laugh when I see people trying to set their kits up like barker. their cymbals too high for them to hit. kinda funny.

1. what Josiah said
2. are other reasons required?
3. fair enough: compared to the attention he gets, the amount of albums they sell, the stages they are on... his playing is all but special. He'ld get burried by every drumteacher I have ever had. And half of them never even played on a serious international album.
Yes, he can play some drums. It would be kinda ridiculous if he (playing for most of his life) would get burried by me (playing only 8-9 years). But the thing is... on his "level" (wich is professional) he... SUCKS.
And you say he's one of the best "punk drummers"? First of all, he should be a "drummer", not a "punk drummer". If punk is all he knows, that, on its own, is allready enough to point and laugh at him.
Second, put him next to Bad Religion's drummer and watch him go down like a bird that's just been shot.
His technique is a nightmare. And his attitude is far worse.
If he were just a member of this forum and would post an audio clip, we would praise him for sure. But the thing is... he is a "professional" player/musician and he simply does not live up to the level he should be on after all those years and all those albums.

I downloaded 2 blink albums and listened to them so I could get a feeling what this travis really is.
I know you can't judge musicians by the albums because everything can be done in the studio nowdays, but after a while a was really surprised what he does. I like his playing. I don't care what he is in the real life really.
I also like this interview: http://www.blink-182.org/facts.interviews.html?show_interview=13

He's good to the untrained ear. Passive music fans just think he's awesome because they don't know any better. they think that fast + tatoos = godly drumming. people like you guys on the board, you know better. most of you are drummers and you know that there are countless drummers who are better musicians than Barker. He's ok when the music fits but it's those damn little kids who make up most of his fanbase, and their Dickies, who elevate him to such a position.

anyway, back on topic...
this is boring, we get a million of these posts all the time - check the archives - i posted something similar when i first started and i didn't realise why people were fed up of it, like i am now :)
he can play drums OK, but he doesn't deserve the recognition he receives. HAVING ALL THE POSTS ABOUT HIM ON HERE IS A FINE EXAMPLE! also, he annoys me and many other people because he looks like and acts like a bit of a w*nker when he should be acting like a role model...
however, to be fair, he's obviously done something right to be in the position he is in, maybe if he wasn't a w*nker he wouldn't have loads of kids thinking he was cool??? but the bottom line is that it's not down to the quality of his drumming...
he got voted Best Punk Drummer in Rhythm or something the other month - I would love to see the justification for that! i don't listen to punk but i'm sure he's can't be the best in the world!!!

First off I don't care about his interviews or anything like that. I KNOW he's an ***. I met him and i've talked to him a lot of times (his hometown is riverside/corona.. look at my home town) my band used to practice at his HORIFFIC clothing line's original store (famous stars and straps). It was cheap and we needed the space.. he used to be there often enough when he wasnt touring. Yeah he seemed like a nice guy at first but when you started talking to him ... you knew he was a money hungry self centered ***.
I wanted to know why his playing sucks so much to everyone.
And you say he's one of the best "punk drummers"? First of all, he should be a "drummer", not a "punk drummer". If punk is all he knows, that, on its own, is allready enough to point and laugh at him.
Yeah thats what he's known for.. I wanted to know why he sucks for being a known punk drummer. (aside from the transplants who I think are horrible)

Of course he's solid. Drumming is his job! 'Solid' does not equal 'good'. He's been playing for most of his life, so he should have left 'solid' behind and at least started moving towards 'good' or 'groovy', or something like that. Sure, he's quite fast, but he can only play in one way. It's always the same, all the time.:(

being solid is his job. its expected of him. a good beginner drummer is solid.
its the drummers who go one step farther and add there own flavour, there the good drummers. travis is just a mediocre drummer who got famous for being in a pop-punk band, and getting lucky by signing with a big label.
that doesnt make him any better than someone whos been playing for 3 years. except the fact that hes got an escalade collection and is dating a supermodel.

We hate him because of threads like this.
Thats not all of it off the top of my head I can think of 7 maybe 10(faith, billdrum, yeti)(the 7 are josiah, ken, jim, damo, matter, bone, and dx) that can smoke Travis. Most don't do it for a living either and don't get half of the exposure and all are much better people then him.
