I have a VF160 multitracker. It has only 2 xlr input but 6 instrument cable sized inputs. I already have 2 xlr mics so Would getting more xlr mics and then getting cables that convert for the instrument cable inputs or do I need a mixer. Sorry if this is not using correct terminology.

are there any good mics made for instrument cable?

i'm not sure exactly, but I think that would be ok, just make sure you get good adaptors and cables. I don't think are really any "good" mics that have instrument cables, pretty much anything over 30 bucks has XLR ends.

Yeah I kinda thought there were no good instrument cable mics. I was just not sure if the adapters would cause a loss in sound quality.

what kind of mics are you going to use? You could just stick with two and use a pair of condenser mics as overheads. It's actually one of the best ways to record drums. Otherwise, you could get a mixing board with multiple XLR inputs and send the main outs into the 1/4 inch inputs on your VF160.

Well will my sound lose some quality if I use the adapter for the xlr to go into the 1/4 inputs? If this will provide good sound I will have no prob since my recorder has 8 inputs including the 2 xlrs. I do plan on recording all instruments with this so consider bass guitar and vocals on this.

you won't lose too much sound quality, but you'll need to add more gain in the preamp (line levels need more boost than mic levels).

Adapters to not damage sound quality in any way unless they're completely terribly made.

Mics only go into mic inputs, regardless of whether those mic inputs are 1/4" (instrument cable type) or XLR inputs. They should be clearly labelled "mic" or "line" and if they're not link us to your mixer so we can tell you.

I thought that was Moaner for a second.

Well actually... a dynamic mic can easily go through to a 1/4" input if you either buy an XLR - 1/4" adaptor, (as stated above) an XLR male to 1/4" female cable, or through a tube preamp or some other effects/processing box that can convert XLR to line.

I really like the Behringer Ultragain series preamps. I personally own the MIC2000, and it adds really nice warmth to all of my mics, dynamic and condensors. it's also a line level preamp, so you can add tube warmth to guitar, bass, keys, drums, vocals, etc. It has this dial that you turn for presets to each instrument, which adds colouration, compression, and limiting effects to the sound.

ANYWAYS.

/knows he sounds like a behringer rep minus the deutsch accent.

there are 2 xlr inputs the rest are the 1/4. That is why I was wondering about xlr to 1/4 converters

It will be fine either buy new cabels or adatpers for the cabels!

Probably better to use a mixer imho, just a cheap behringer 7 xlr input then 2 patch cables to hook it in the 1/4" inputs.
