I know of a lot of good bands, but I dont know off hand if they are in standard tunning.

Try some Dream Theater, Nevermore, Symphony X and Sonata Arctica. I usually play my own material on the guitar. You may also want to check out the guitar forums.

Nevermore plays with 7 strings and down a half step.

Symphony X tunes down I believe.

But anyways...

I reccomend Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Anthrax.

Uh, it's not a baritone, nor do they ever tune "really low."

Petrucci uses a 7-string occasionally, but only on certain songs. Most of their songs are in standard on a 6 string.

Some of Savatage's early work was in standard with a few tunes in drop D.

Lost Horizon play in standard as well. Wuthering Heights, I think.

ToT there were a few in C, and on most of Octavarium and throughtout the tour for it they used a 7.

Who cares what tuning they use? Nile use drop A (AEADF#B), that doesn't mean they're not good. Death and Necrophagist use D standard (DGCFAD), that doesn't mean they're not good. Megadeth and Metallica both used Eb standard for parts of their career. Nevermore is usually 7 strings Bb standard or something like that. Iced Earth are Eb standard. Opeth are usually E standard or drop D/open D/some D variant.

Not really, a lot of great bands play in drop-tunings and just plain downtuned.

I love metal and hardly ever play downtuned stuff on guitar. It feels so awkward and esaier to make somthing heavy. I feeel that if you dont downtune you have to have a strong riff/song/lick whatever to make it sound heavy.

nope, you sure don't, but sometimes it's not so much a matter of it sounding heavy, it's got to do with new chords and notes that you can play with.

Dillinger Escape Plan instantly came to mind but I can't really think of many other bands.

Dark Tranquillity have some tunes in standard and I'm pretty sure The Mars Volta are all standard too.

I've been writing alot of my own stuff in standard these days but I'm about to join a band who do drop-c so I'll have to sit and get used to the different chords whilst detuned now :(

Avenged Sevenfold is Drop D.

Some Pantera is in standard, not all though.

Really, honestly, there's only so many riffs and chord progressions you can use in standard tuning. That's why Opeth used the open D tuning for something like half of Ghost Reveries...they got bored of standard. And because it forced them to come up with new leads and riffs in a tuning that they've never used before.

You don't have to be in standard E tuning to sound heavy. You don't necessarily have to downtune either.

And somebody said that drop D was the nu-standard tuning...Opeth have used it.

i am the robots
01-25-2006, 09:27 PM

Don't most metal bands play in standard tuning? It's only the nu metal ones that play in drop D because it's easier to play powerchords that way.

Generally, all of the extreme metal bands tune down. Thrash and possibly Black Metal (I've never actually looked into what tuning BM bands play in) is an exception in some cases. Most of these modern NWOAHM band tune down too, I think.

Power Metal and Speed Metal bands generally play in standard though.
