Yeah I can--not especially well, but I'm pretty comfortable sightreading music with it or improvising.
It's such an amazing instrument. Real snakeskin, real horsehair... It's also very light and SO portable. It's great not to have to bring an amp along or lug a 50 pound keyboard.
The downside is that it's a pretty sensitive instrument. If you start to tense up when you're playing, you can audibly hear it in your tone. Also the intonation is a really big issue, even more than on a violin, because a violin has a fingerboard--an Erhu doesn't have a fingerboard, so the harder you "fret" the strings the higher the pitch gets. Also you have to learn to bow both outwards and inwards because the bow is between the two strings. :)
Anyways, it's so fun to practice though. Time passes so fast when you're playing an Erhu.

You play capoeira or just after the berimbau?
Isnt there a similar african insrument to the berimbau, since capoeira originated from african cultures?
I don't play, but I'm a big fan. I think the lack of any schools/mestres in my region is the biggest factor in my not playing. :upset:
There is a similar San ("bushman") instrument, in English simply called the Bow. I have no idea what the San name for it is. It's very similar to a berimbau in fact, almost the same thing, just much smaller and with less of a resonant quality. Although I have no idea how it came from the San people to the Angolans. It's probably just coincidence.

Most likely, although the african slaves were taken from different african cultures. Im going to look into that bow instrument out of curiosity. Hopefully I'll start learning the berimbau and different toques (rhyhms) soonish! Those rhythms just make you want to move!
Thats unlucky not to have any nearby, I could ask on a capoeira site about schools in SA, if youd like.

That'd be cool, mate. I've tried before and I only came across one phone number, of a school which had since closed down (and was too far away from me anyway). I've been looking for something to replace my karate for ages - my parents won't let me just stop karate because I need the excercise, but I hate it because I suck at it.
EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musical_bow. Apparently the instrument was prevalent in Congo too, which would help explain the Angolan connection. :thumb:

isn't this a "show us your penis" kind of thread.
Who cares how many instruments you own... it's all about how well you play them.
My Intruments:
-Warwick Corvette Standard (Bass)
-Squire P-bass (Bass)
-Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Guitar)
-Yamaha Keyboard
-Ludwig 4 piece drum set (It's about 60-70 years old)
-A exotic, we think, Brazillian Marimba (it is only 2 1/2 feet long, it is not a 5 octave one) with gourd resinaters. My mom picked it up and a swap meet because me and my brother play Mallet Percussion.
Then my bro's intruments:
-Fender Strat. (Guitar)
-Gibson Les Paul Special (Guitar)
-Wasburn Acoustic Dreadknot (Guitar)
-Hofner, I think, Acoustic Classical (Guitar)
And I am planing to buy my school Upright Bass off them for the fact that it is German and great sounding, but its really knicked up.
BTW, that godonlyknows instrument, i think it's a dulcimer.
No it isnt. A Dulcimer has 3 or 4 strings, and I am not sure what instrument that one is but I had one or I still have it.
I own:
- One bass guitar
- One Alto Saxophone
- One Tenor Saxophone
My bro owns:
- One piano
- 2 Keyboards (1 "piano-like" Roland, one Yamaha PSR 9000 Pro)
- 1 Synthesizer
- 2 Electric guitars (one ****ty, one good)
- 1 Accoustic guitar (over 30 years old and still sounds fine :))
- 3 Microphones (I've seen over-ambitious girls with mircophones in their hands... Trust me, this is an instrument :))
- Recording stuff
- A pc with spiffeh music software
- A drum (****ty, he actually used a wooden wine box instead of a snare with brushes in his last song... and tbh it sounds ****ing cool)
That's it, not that spectacular, but not too shabby either :)
EDIT: darn I used a lot of bad words in this post lol
Where is everyone getting these ocarinas? Homemade, or Songbird, or something else... Songbird is the only brand I've ever heard of.
