Was browsing around and found the following:

http://cort.axegrinder.com/cgi-bin/cutecast/cutecast.pl?session=gEy5CHWuNJVDMuKu5vllQV7JVn&forum=1&thread=541

How true is it or is it a crock of rubbish?

Hi there, this may seem a dumb post
but after hearing so many "Cort made this, Cort made that too"...
do ya think its possible to list out what are the brands of Guitars that Cort Makes OEM>???

so far i only know that Fenders and Ibanez's are made by them, what else?
does it include both Acoustic and Electric models?

I've heard from this site and from a couple cort vendors-
Conkin
Epiphone
Schecter
Fender (probably just squire)
Ibanez

I don't know if all of those are verifyable or not, it wouldn't surprise me either way. Also, they might make guitars for Jackson, since Jackson is owned by fender, but that's just a crazy idea I had.

Acoustic, I don't know.

Because there are not so many Korean factories (Samick and Cort ?), this question should not be impossible to resolve.
If we can list all the brands that have MIK guitars, we could try to find out who makes them.
So far, the list is:
Cort:
Cort (of course or would they subcontract it to Samick ?)
Conkin
Epiphone
Schecter
Fender (probably just squire)
Ibanez
Tanglewood
Washburn
BC Rich
Brian Moore
Lakland

Unknown Korean:
Jackson
Agile (Rondo music)
ESP/LTD
Hamer ?
G&L Tribute
Spector

Samick:
Samick
Silvertone
Greg Bennett

I bet that the list will become long and that within a couple of years, we will be able to make a similar chinese list (including the Cort Chinese factory).
Maybe we could check with Samick dealers to hear their version of the story.

The Samick site does is not rich on information either. A typical problem with low cost operations ?

Edit: I'll try to keep the list updated as information flows in.

BC Rich, Brian Moore, and Lakland are made by cort too.
I don't have a definitive list. I don't know who would, or would want to give out such info. It doesn't really matter to me, unless someone compares a cort unfavorably against one of the other brands it makes.
I'm not a "yes man" for cort either. I have seen the best and worst they can make. Just like any other maker, some lemons get out. overall I genuinely think they make some fine fine guitars. and are a really good value. My collection has a bit of everything in it, and the Corts stand up against most of them.

This thread of harmony central might document the issue further.

Gibson owns Epiphone, but they subcontract the building of the basses to a factory owned by Cort. I have heard before that Cort are actually the most prolific guitar builders around - it's just that only a fraction of the stuff they make they actually design themselves and release with their own brand on it.

I know not a lot of people skateboard here but

I remember when I used to, I read lots of things about how up to 5 or 6 big name brands were all put out from the same factory.

So it really doesn't suprise me that it would happen with basses too.

and if cort makes G&L Tributes? I take my hat off to them, because they're fantastic

Obviously Cort can't make Fenders, seeing how they're named "MIA" and "MIM", made in American and Mexico.

Schecters are made in Korea though, I know that. They give them a setup in America, but that's about it.

The Conklin really suprised me, I never would have thought.

I've heaqrd this before, and it doesn't suprise me. Cort stuff is beautiful (even the low end basses)

There's always the possibility Cort makes the parts/bodies/pickups etc. and then they're assembled in Mexico

I don't believe that'd be the case for MIA though

Well then they would be called CIM, as in crafted in Mexico. That's why basses assembled in Japan are called CIJ.

They're made in Korea. MIA and MIM aren't.

I didn't know there were Korean fenders.

I'm pretty sure the new 24fret Jazzbass is made in Korea, as well as a few other models

And they have been made for a while - my Dean was made in Korea, and that model was discontinued a decade ago. The electronics are a little shabby, but after taking it apart and taking a look at the circuitboard I blame that on the/a previous owner(s). They've changed the pots, and obviously used cheap ones. But the neck on it is superb - if I ever get a custom six, I'm having the neck based on this one. :)
