A lot of you know, I play a Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 with passive EMG Hz pickups. Now, I was interested in changing them, so I contacted EMG:

Hey guys. I play a Schecter Stiletto Elite 5 with EMG Hz and currently want an upgrade.

I was wondering what pickups EMG offers that are active and slip right into the original size cavities where the Hz pickups are. Are there any? I don't think I'd need to route another cavity for an added battery if I already have an onboard preamp, do I? I'd like to hope the active EMG pickup would run off the same battery as the preamp. This would reduce battery life, I assume?

I sort of want a neck pickup with a lot of thump and lowend like a Precision-style pickup and a bridge pickup with lots of midrange and growl like a Jazz-style pickup for the bridge position. If so, it seems like the 35P and 45J are the way to go, but I could be wrong on this. If you could suggest something, that would be much appreciated, but not necessary, since that's not really your job. =P

Last I read on MusicianForums.com (a site I mod with awesome people, check it out), someone said the QuickConnect in the Hz's only works with other Hz's. Is this true? If so, would I need to install a whole new preamp to upgrade to a pickup of any other company?

Thanks a lot!

-Gavin Corey, Boston, MA

No guys here; just me.

1) If the HZ's are 4.0 inches wide, then go with the 40 Extended series soapbars; 40P5 neck/40J bridge.
2) If you have an existing active EQ, then you can run everything off of a single battery. And yes, it will run the battery down quicker.
3) Yes, HZ cables can only be used with other HZ's. You'll just have to replace the pup cable, not the whole EQ.

Cool site by the way!

Where can I find a replacement PUP cable? So I need to solder it to the EMG pre-amp in the same way the current PUP cable is soldered?

Thanks for your response. =D

2 questions:

1) Active or passive cable?

2) Mailing address?

1-Active electronics with passive pickups, so I assume active (let me know if I'm wrong).

2- My address is *************************.

Please don't send me a bomb or something. =D

-Gav

I'm assuming passive, so I'll send a couple of each cable type, just in case.

If the envelope is ticking, soak it in water!

Rock on,

Rick

Wow, thanks a lot, man! I'll order those pickups as soon as I get the cash, then!

Thanks again!

-Gav

Talk about customer service. :)

Awesome. Some places don't care if you rot in hell as long as you buy something first. Great service like that is definitely a huge part of why I buy something from a particular company.

Saweet :)

That's the way how it should be! I've send Thomastik Infeld something about my strings some time ago and their techie didn't reply. He was at vacation or something like that, but I'm still waiting for a reply.

Thats pretty cool. When I bought a yamaha rbx774 from samash it was missing a battery cover and I called yamaha and they sene me the whole battery unit! Shame the neck was defective and sam ash had it out anyway. scumbags.

The bass i own was made in... 1983 i think. I'm pretty sure the company got the crap sued out of them and disappeared.

To complain to them how crap my bass was

The bridge snapped in half, and i would have been nice for someone to have paid for that.

Technically it's overpriced anyway, so it wouldn't hurt them to throw in 2 little cables with 1/2 a cent each. Plus they want you to like them so you buy more.

No no, I say ++faith in humanity because quite simply, I thought capitalism was taking a backseat to corporation integrity.

Good to see that isn't so.

I contacted Fender with basically the same question and it took them 3 weeks to respond. BTW let's laugh at Gav for having 2 first names.

Now that is good service, it shows they do care about what they do. The guy could have easily got Gav to get the cables himself and Gav probably still would have gone for EMGs. Essentially the tech is just there for information purposes, not sending stuff out to you. I now have a new found respect for EMG and am proud that 3 out of my four basses have EMG HZ pickups. :p

people with two first names are more likely to be serial killers. its so wierd to know gavs last name now. good customer service story though.

Haha!! :D Thats sweet! That guy is awesome

Also, the people at Schecter are really cool too. Dead friendly and helpful with me and offered to send me some allen keys out for my bass straight away!

Seriously, I've suggested it before and will suggest it again. We should have a customer service review thread. People post their experiences with different companies, etc. and how it went. I think it'd be a helpful resource.

I don't know about the CS guy, think about this. EMG only makes one line of passive pickups. Gav clearly stated he had the Hz line. Why would the CS guy need to ask if he needs a passive or active cable?

It's nice to see that they answered you promptly and they are going to send you some free stuff, but maybe they should learn their product better. I know this is something minor, but its somewhat of a big deal if the CS person doesn't know their product.

What's so funny about me having two first names? I've always been the guy in school people call "Corey Gavin." I actually didn't go to my school for the first week of freshman year, technically, because Corey Gavin was admitted but never paid the down payment for tuition, but Gavin Corey (me) got a schedule because I took the placement test while Corey Gavin did not. Because Gavin Corey didn't make a tuition payment, he was never enrolled in any classes, so I wasn't on any of the roll calls freshman year. I was confused as hell until we figured it out.

But yeah...EMG rules now. Maybe they'll send free pickups, too. :D
