no idea wuts best, but newyork tends to have overpriced everything in my experience. if ur really worried maybe u could buy a stanard universal case put it in a gig bag and duct tape it shut. that sound pretty safe to me.

Use a proper shipping carton put it in a hard case and padd it out with anything soft. Or mail it home.

Don't tape it unless you want it to get searched.
People are pretty paranoid about what goes on planes, y know?

I bought a Pelican 1750 case for my Schecter C5. It comes with solid cell foam which you cut to fit the shape of whatever you want to put inside. It's pricy (at least $150) and heavy but it's the strongest case I've ever seen.
The warranty card that came with it says they'll replace it for life if it ever breaks, and on the card there's a picture of a truck running over one. I'd say they're pretty confident in it's strength.

Get it gate checked though, the baggage conveyor thingy is pretty rough on cases.

You do NOT want to see what happens to your gear when it goes on a plane...or when it's shipped out to you, for that matter.

how about a rifle case?

You'd probably have to cut the foam by hand (I just read something around here about doing it with a turkey carver), but you can be almost guaranteed that NOTHING is going to hurt it.

just get a gator case or something and cut the foam.

I mailed mine, got here fine. I would probably bring it on a plane next time thought, so pissed I spent 50 dollars to ship it and got a fwe days after I got home. Lame.
