View Full Version : *Audio* Shure Microphone Test

here's a little bit of me testing out my brand new Shure PG Microphone set.
The levels may seem off because I did all the level by myself. Meaning that I had to guess and check... but I just wanted to test some audio. Have a listen if you wish.

Wow I just love your playing and your snare sounds really good! How tight do you tune it?

thanks. I'm glad you like it.
If you notice any problems with the levels, be sure and tell me.
my snare, btw, has a medium tight bottom head and a slightly more tight top head. On my drum, from a finger tight tension, they are about 3 full turns

Nice man. I really enjoy the playing :thumb: How many mics did you use out of the whole set?

I used 4 of 6. My boom stands won't come in until next week, so I don't have the condensors set up.
has anyone noticed any sound level issues that just stick out?

How long you been playing?

6 years now. I'm not sure if I'm good for that length of time or what.

Sounds good to me. Have you taken lessons? I've only been playing 3 years myself and you sound like a much more solid player than I do IMO.

Did you tune your toms differently? I keep reading thats its best to tune your toms to the lowest note but that seems like a lot of work just for a recording(unless its a major recording), so I was wondering how yours were tuned.

Very nice playing. Not a bad sound actually, it does sound a bit diddy though and not in-your-face, if that makes sense.
Your snare sounds a lot like mine :D , though your toms sound completly different. Nice work , very clean playing

I tune my toms in tune with each other. Both top and bottom head resonate. Then depending on what drum i'm using, I'll adjust the levels.
I always have a lot of treble to emphasize the attack and depending on the range, I adjust the bass or mid more or less than others.

that does make sense, but i'm a jazz drummer/vibraphonists, so I'm used to paraphrasing solos through melodic methods. Whenever I play drums, I usually have some sort of musical line moving through my head.

was it just me or were you hitting the rims on the toms (like my friend does and it drives me crazy. but i don't want to say anything because if i do it once he'll get off on me). maybe i was hearing things.

oh, and the quality is good, nice snare drum sound too. Record yourself playing with a song that you know, then try to find some guitarists to do it too.

I was definitely hitting the rim. It's a timbre thing for me. I like the way it sounds. Maybe one or two were accidents...but I do it on purpose.

^I caught that too. Didn't really affect my overall impression of your playing though. I thought it sounded great :thumb:

Was that recorded from mic's through mixboard directly to your computer? I'm looking to do some recording also, but I don't know if I need something inbetween the mixboard and computer... Anyways, great playing! It sounds really good :thumb:

^^^yeah. I have a Peavey 10 USB 2.0 mixer. It works very well apparently... my first attempt with actually recording stuff. But I did my homework and I think it paid off.

The cymbals, especially the hi-hats come out really nice. Which is very good considering you haven't used the overheads yet.
The snare seems a bit thin, try a subtle boost around 100Hz or adding another mic underneath and mixing the two tones. But the snare still comes out fairly well, the lack of body on it is a fairly minor issue. It doesn't stick out massively on the recording, but if you put it in with guitars you'd notice it needed beefing up.
The kick seems fairly muffled, I'm guessing the mic was fairly near the middle of the head or on the pillow inside the kick. If so, try placing the mic just at the hole , or moving the mic to closer to the top of the head so more of the head comes through. Try boosting a little at 4kHz to get the 'snap' in so it cuts through the toms better.
The toms seemed a bit weak but I'm sure the overheads will fix that and the snare to some extent. Overall it's good, alot better than some recordings I've heard with more mics.
I'll give it another listen when my nearfields come through.

the hats are a titch loud, you can turn the "hi" freq on the kick up just a titch, and your crashes were kind of soft - you should mess with the positions of your condensers a bit more.
sounds great and great playing! those toms are nice

thanks for the revival.
To address the kick issue... the kick mic isn't placed yet cause I haven't gotten a stand for it yet... and the condensors have the same issue.
But the criticism is very much appreciated... :smoke:
