well, today i took the plunge and decided to tune my G&L to BEAD. I bought a 5 string set of Ernie Balls and strung them up. i'm not sure that i want to commit to this tuning for good, so i didn't sand the nut down. the strings are sorta in them....... :p i sound like a total n00b, though i'm not..... is this gonna cause problems? also, is this the reason that i can't get the B string intonated correctly? i've moved the saddle as far back as it will go, but the 12th fret is still too sharp. if the groove in the nut is fixed properly, will i be able to be intonated correctly?

Most likely that's what you would need to do. I'd be more worried about the tension on the nut if the string is not in the groove, it might break it.

ah, yes, this was another fear that i forgot to ask about..... ok, well then if i sand the nut down as little as possible, will i get buzzing from the nut if i decide to go back to EADG down the road?

hah, i had another idea..... is there an MX "official BEADer club"? 'cause i'd like to be a member if there is!

well, i dunno about the strings you use, but if i tune .105-.050 strings to BEAD, they are too loose to play.

anyway, i sanded down the nut and now i was able to properly intonate the B string.

Playing a five-string tuned down to GBEAD is pretty fun untill u go to play For whom the bell tolls and relize u aint got enough frets.

Wouldn't the correct tuning be F#BEAD?

if you wanted to go back to EADG, you could put a small piece of paper/card into the groove on the nut to help hold the strings in it. My acoustic guitar has tiny gauge strings and thats what i did, and still sounds amazing, no fretbuzz at all.

the tension on them wont be enough, itll sound like crap. just buy a 5 string set, you'll be much happier with the heavier guage strings on, it'll sound much better.
what kind of warwick do you own?

you could do put perhaps that extra half step down would make the string too floppy. I'd only downtune my B that low when my drummer is good enough to play Meshuggah
