What type of kit do you have? And what color?

I've got a piss poor Percussion Plus, but i've been thinking just to upgrade my set one step @ a time... so my plan was to first get some toms, cuz my bass and snare are tuned really well. And i have a black kit but i'm currently refinishing it w/ golden oak finish

I'd say go try out some kits and see what toms you like the best. Conaway might be away to go. Maybe Gretch or Mapex all depends on what sound your going for.
Edit: I'm not sure if it would affect anything, but you might not want to get each thing by it's self because some kits (I know DW is) are sonicly matched to sound best together. Just something to think about.

Upgrading bit by bit is stupid with a kit.
You usually get $100-$200 off buying it in one whack, plus the sale price at the shop, so you save a big bit of money.
The wait is totally worth it at the end when you've got a new kit and money left in the pocket.

And then that money in the pocket goes towards cymbals

only replace cymbals and hardware like that...doing it with a kit is pointless...you'd have nowhere to mount it...

i agree, save up for a new whole set, and save the money all at once

10"x8" ; 12"x10" ; 14"x12" as rack toms and 16"x16" ; 18"x16" floor toms that'll do
