Okay, the Peavey's gotta go, I've once again accumulated too many basses and have no need for this one anymore.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/edgebass5/268847394_l.jpg

4-String
35" Scale, 24 fret
Active Peavey VLF Pickups
Active Peavey 3-Band onboard Tone circuit
Master volume and pickup blend controls
Sting-thru bridge
neckthru construction
13-degree angled headstock
black hardware
Cirrus 'C' inlay on the 12th fret

This thing is in like-new condition and plays like a million bucks. The tone has been described to me (and I would agree with it) as being very similar to a Warwick Corvette but with half the growl and twice the brightness and attack (in other words if you were to take a Warwick Corvette and a Musicman Stingray and combine the tones... somewhere in the middle you'd have the tone of this bass).

I'm including a vintage Peavey hardshell case with this (circa 1983). However, due to the condition of the case I'm not adding any money to my selling price due to the case. The case is structurally sound, but has numerous scuffs and less than stable latches. All-in-all it looks about like it should for being a 23 year old hardshell case. Once again, no charge for this case.

I'm asking $400 (which includes shipping anywhere in the lower 48 of the US). I am however interested in obtaining a new wireless unit as mine took a dive a few months back. If you want to trade me a wireless unit for this bass we can work out the details of the trade depending on the value and condition of the wireless unit in question.

Contact preference is edge_q5@yahoo.com, thanks for looking!

That's a pretty nice bass. I hear that the BXP's are on par with the custom shop series, with some obvious differences.

I know you're mainly a slap and pick guy, but how would you describe the fingerstyle tone? Also, what body and neck woods? I know I don't have the money, but maybe someday soonish.

The body wood is unknown to me, the Peavey website simply references "exotic woods". The fingerboard is rosewood, the neck is pau ferro with what appear to be rosewood inlays that extend through the body. The body top is their bubinga finish, but honestly it doesn't look like the typical bubinga I've seen, but that might have something to do with the fact that its a laminate top and not a solid piece.

The fingerstyle tone (with EQ set flat) is pretty aggressive. It cuts through very well in a band setting. I recorded the original takes for my metal band's album with this thing (once again... with EQ set flat) and it had a definite Ryan Martinie sort of vibe to the mids. I don't currently have any recordings of it, so I don't have anything to post. Sorry. The onboard EQ is VERY versatile so you can get a lot of tones out of it just from the bass.

Having never played one, how would you describe the playability?

I'm fairly interested, but I'm not sure I should look too far into it if I can't play one beforehand...

The playability is great. The neck is very Stingray'esqe. In other words its slightly bigger in all directions than a J neck, and slightly smaller in all directions than a P neck. The current setup is great, really low action, absolutely no buzz in the lower register and only the slightest buzz in the upper register (that's going through an avalon U5, a less hi-fi amp probably wouldn't even pickup the buzz to be honest).

IF you still have it in about a week, I may contact you (depending on the deal I can get with a Ric and a Stingray I'm looking at). Don't hold in on my behalf, though, since I'm still undecided on what bass to buy.

I need a new four string bass, though I don't play four strings much anymore, but I don't have the money at the moment. :(

How much do you think the price would be if I wanted to come and pick it up? I'm down here in Beaverton, Oregon.

Well, its about a 4 hour drive to Richland from Beaverton, but I'd knock off $50 for a pick-up instead of shipping it. Depending on what you drive you'd likely spend that much in gas money just to get up here though.

Ibasslikethis: Well, I'm not really a fan of SUB's... they just don't feel good in my hands for some reason, not really sure why. I was just offered a '91 G&L L-2000 for it, so I might end up just going with that anyway.

Thanks for the interest though guys. If anyone else wants to make an offer on it feel free as I'm not 100% commited to the G&L trade just yet.

thats cool, i dont think i would actually trade for it. waht i really want is a 5 string BPX. the neck on the one that i played was just dreamy. if it was a 5, i would sell my SUB and tackle rape that deal.

Thanks. There are only 2 mainstream manufacturers that I'm loyal to, Peavey and Fender.

I've always been a Peavey Amp and guitar person from the time I got my T-40 back in 1979. Peavey makes great products, and even if they're made overseas, Peavey corp of America inspects each and every one before it goes to the stores. If it doesn't meet their expectations, it doesn't leave the factory.

My T-40 has lasted me for 27 years. My 400 Series Bass head has been working since 1978. My old Combo (bought new in 79) has been through many years of constant gigging without any problems, and my friend is still using it today.

^^^Yeah, I really like the reliability on solid-ness of Peavey gear, I'm just ultimately realizing that its not for me. With the exception of my 1983 Peavey Foundation 4-string that I beat like a red-headed stepchild every night on stage. I seriously treat that bass horribly, I slam it into things, I slam my fists into it to resonate an open E from time-to-time (about 20 times a show, ) and it still plays and sounds great EVERY SINGLE TIME.

you dont like 35" scale? i love it....

edgebass5
01-22-2006, 01:39 PM
The scale length is definitely one of the reasons I'm getting rid of it. 35" works great for some people and when I downtune the added scale length is nice, but I'm really a fan of 34" scale with medium or light gauge strings because of the amount of bending and vibrato in my playing.

Oh, and just for reference while we're talking about scale length and everything, this bass intonates almost perfectly at both the 12th and 24th frets :D

you dont like 35" scale? i love it....

its not as easy on the fingers when you are bending or doing Vibrato, and it not as fluid for tapping.

For tapping, 32" ftw.

In all honesty, I'm considering it. I love the U5, but if I could snag that Peavy...I'm a total bass collecting freak.

Plus, I have the studio to play and record through all the Avalon gear I'd ever want.

It's a pretty fair trade, too. I payed 425 for the Avalon, and you were originally asking 400.

As far as I've seen playing through it, there's nothing wrong with the Avalon both cosmetically and technically. Sounds as great as any. Aestheitcally there's nothing wrong, either; everything is in perfect working order.

Let's talk if you're interested.

what would you do with two U5's, out of curiosity?

edgebass5

what would you do with two U5's, out of curiosity?

Well, each U5 only takes up half of a 2U space. So, having another one in my rack certainly won't hurt anything (admittadely it will add a few pounds to my rack which is a bummer, but not that big of a deal). Another idea would be in case I wanted to use 2 cabs, and just my one rack when playing with another bassist or giving lessons which I've been doing a lot lately. Another idea of mine was this: I use two basses on stage, one in Eb standard tuning, the other in Db drop tuning. I've always wanted a way to avoid either switching basses or having to tune onstage and have the crowd hear it. My old Fender TBP-1 had a mute switch that solved that problem, but the U5 doesn't have that function (unfortunately). My thought was to install an A/B/Y box after the outputs of the U5 and just have my two stage basses in their respective tunings beforehand, leave them plugged in (since they're both passive anyway), and whenever I need to switch to a different tuning just grab the different bass, stomp to side A or B of the A/B/Y box and get my playing underway without the crowd having to hear me unplug or tune.

The trick to that second scenario would be finding an A/B/Y box that had both XLR inputs and outputs, as well as sufficient input headroom to handle the balanced 600mV output of the U5's, and sufficient output to properly drive my QSC PLX1602 power amp.
