I have Remo Emporer heads (coated and black resonant) and wanted to know what porting it changes. I'd like to try it, but i don't want to dislike it and not be able to go back.
I have pdp double pedals if that changes anything.

-easier to mic
-less resonance (depending on size)
-more beater relief (less rebound)
no real pros/cons, just preference

i might try it just for ****s and giggles because it can't kill the head really.
Also, placement? dead center or off to the side?

EQ2 > port. Has a wee vent in it for micing.

Pros: Easier to adjust pillow, but that's only if you have one or if you don't externally muffle.
Cons: Sounds crap, not as much rebound, pointless?
just get HOLZ, the only reason to porty!

It helps control the boom and give more attack and focus. Porting off center keeps the air from going directly out the hole keeping some of the body.

With that in mind, i'll just leave it how it is then.
What style do you play and what sound do you want?

I play classic rock and heavy metal (maiden like stuff). for sound, i really don't know, i guess it sounds find how it is. Maybe just something new.
If you like it the way it is keep it that way for a while but you might to try it eventually and see what you prefer. Most drummers port their front heads so it's worth trying.

Depends on the sound. Just remember you can't put it back.
I use whole heads and ported ones, just depends on the music and venue.

I too, have a ported head, and a non ported head, depending on my mood and the situation.

Yeah it makes the drum alot easier to mic also,it tends to make the drum a tad bit more punchy

I like the feel of a ported head. the air inside the head depressurizes quicker. I have a ported head and I like it.

it decreases resonance alot... but dont put it in the center b/c you will loose way too much resonance... i dont like them personally because you loose rebound of your pedal and i like my pedal too bounce back

Well if you want beater relief and feel from porting make the ports smaller, Don't cut giant holes in the drum otherwise you'll end up with a "Thud Thud" which sucks.
